Position Overview
Serves as an independent researcher, or a collaborator on a multi-scholar research initiative. May have lead responsibility for discrete components of a larger project under the general direction of a senior or principal researcher.

Duties may include:
Performing complex scientific analyses
Adjusting experimental designs as necessary based on experimental data analysis
Directing the development of recommendations for project solutions
Performing peer review of scientific projects, studies, or applications and making recommendations
Preparing peer reviewed publications or presentations
Resolving complex project specific technical and regulatory issues
Establishing work priorities and performance standards, hiring, training, evaluating staff, assigning, and reviewing work
May be responsible for technical project management to include developing the scope of work, budgeting, scheduling, reporting, implementing field projects, and approving scientific documents
Participating in the development of grant proposals as named project contributor
Other duties as assigned

The Research Scientist I, Mechanical Engineering will be a part of an initiative in Computational One Health at the University of Idaho. Computational One Health is a widely adopted framework that views human, wildlife, and livestock health as an integrated system. This position will complement and strengthen our Computational One Health team by providing expertise in mechanical engineering and product design. This expertise is critical to the development of new sensors and devices that monitor the health of wild animal populations and automate the delivery of medicines or vaccines to these populations, and works with design ideation, the product development process, computer aided design principles, mechatronics, computer or microcontroller coding, image recognition or artificial intelligence, constructing research equipment through various fabrication processes, and conducting testing with research equipment.

Position Qualifications
Required Experience
Three years of research experience related to the domain of this position.

Required Education
Ph.D. in Engineering, Computer Science, Industrial Design, or Product Development.

Additional Preferred
Experience writing proposals and acquiring externally funded grants
Demonstrated ability to develop experimental equipment
Experience in design of experiments
Experience disseminating research results demonstrated through a record of publication in reputable journals
Experience developing models of scientific phenomena
Ability to independently solve problems and perform complicated tasks
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Ability to lift, carry, and/or otherwise move up to 20 pounds
Lab and field conditions
