Perform Phase 1, Phase 2, or Phase 3 archaeological surveys and related laboratory analysis as assigned by Director. Supervise archaeological fieldwork under the direction of Principal Investigator.

The Applied Anthropology laboratories is accepting applications for multiple
On-call Temporary Archaeological Crew Chiefs. These Crew Chiefs will work for the department on a project-by-project basis. We have projects pending for imminent fieldwork. Join a team of experts as we Learn, Work, and Discover!

Job Function:

Perform Phase 1, Phase 2, or Phase 3 archaeological surveys and related laboratory analysis as assigned by Director. Supervise archaeological fieldwork under the direction of Principal Investigator.

Minimum Education:

Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or related field with relevant training in Anthropology and/or Archaeology or equivalent experience. Training in laboratory analysis of prehistoric cultural materials.

Minimum Experience:

At least one year full-time experience in Midwestern archaeology, and one year of supervisory experience in Cultural Resource Management or under similar working conditions.

Preferred Experience:

Prior experience conducting archaeological reconnaissance in a supervisory capacity on land owned by the State of Indiana.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise reconnaissance survey, including surface collection and/or shovel test pit survey.
  • Record standard field notes, including photographs, maps, and textual descriptions as appropriate. Verify accuracy of field records.
  • Collaborate with team members to accomplish project goals.
  • Perform, independently or as part of a team, test unit excavation in controlled manner.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by Principal Investigator or Field Director.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
