Responsibilities
The Pre-Med Advisor and Health Career Counselor is responsible for supporting students and alumni seeking entry into graduate schools to pursue medicine, dentistry, veterinarian medicine, and the allied health professions (e.g. physical therapy, physicians assistant); provide strategic and practical guidance and support for students with other academic majors who are pursuing graduate programs in the health professions (e.g. medical school). As a specialized Career Counselor, the pre-Med Advisor also acts as a liaison with the Director of Health Sciences and other academic programs in the health sciences and natural sciences to develop curricular and co-curricular support services. This position is also a key member of a Career Center team, which offers comprehensive and proactive career planning and preparation through campus workshops and events, by connecting and promoting Saint Mary's students to prospective employers, and integrating professional skills and development into the undergraduate and graduate educational experience. Culturally competent programming and support of first-generation students are key priorities for professional development and student support services at Saint Mary's College.

1. PRE-MED ADVISING:
- Chair the College's Pre-Med Committees and write letters of recommendation;
- Build and maintain connections with local hospitals, summer programs etc.;
- Coordinate internships and professional experiences for pre-med students;
- Collaborate with academic programs on pre-med certificates and advising.

2. CAREER COUNSELING:
-Meet with students individually by appointment, and with groups according to their common interests and goals, particularly within the area of Health Sciences;
-Develop Pre-Med, Health Science, Nursing, and Natural Sciences professional pathways as a disciplinary area of expertise, and establish collaborative partnerships with academic programs to best serve their students;
- Curate resources, events, and online engagement targeted to students interested in pursuing careers in medicine, health care, nursing, or natural sciences;
-Provide foundational career services to students by appointment or walk-in, including career or internship exploration, resume advice, LinkedIn and other online profiles, and professional development support.
- Coordinate internships and professional experiences for health science students.
-Models highest standards of student-centered Lasallian values and commitment to equity, access, cultural competency, and professional development.
-Contributes to continuous process improvement by maintaining an ongoing feedback loop with the directors regarding faculty, staff, student and visitor customer experiences.

3. COLLABORATION AND TEAM SUPPORT:
-Participate in team-based programming, student and employer outreach initiatives, and promotion/marketing campaigns.
-Work with faculty and staff to support career development initiatives in CPDS and in partnership with the Academic Schools, Core Curriculum, Student Success Offices, and Student Life.
-Serve on campus committees and participate in initiatives as a representative of the Career Center and the Division of Academic Success as needed.

4. PROGRAMMING AND OUTREACH:
- Programming for students interested in Health Science careers/grad programs;
- Introduce first-year students to expectations and opportunities for volunteer and research experience;
- Critically consider and apply appropriate theories of student development and culturally appropriate career counseling to best meet students and their goals where they are and aspire to be;
- Proactive and collaborative work with academic programs to integrate and diversify career exploration, preparation, and success in their curriculum and co-curricular activities.
- Develop and maintain a list of internship and volunteer/shadowing opportunities for pre-health students.

5. DOCUMENTATION & ASSESSMENT:
- Keep detailed advising records for individual students.
- Maintain comprehensive records of the pre-health population: student use of advising, assessment data, graduate program applications and acceptances, and graduate school completions.
- Maintain a pre-health library, which includes resources for students and faculty advisors--both in the office and on the website.

6. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
- Active membership in NAAHP (and WAAHP) and attend regional meeting and biannual national meeting
- Keep up with current trends in requirements, understand exam scores and strategies (MCAT, DAT, OAT, NAPE, GRE, etc.).
- Attend training and workshops on-campus or externally, which are required or recommended for frontline staff interacting with students as a supervisor and in office reception.
-Explore opportunities for personal and professional growth, such as serving on committees or participating in training and experiences that fall outside this position but may build related competencies and skills, or a broader range of experience and cross-training needed to pursue future opportunities.

7. Other Duties as Assigned Assists Director with projects affecting CPDS and Academic Success.

Experience and Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: REQUIRED: Bachelor's Degree STRONGLY PREFERRED: Master's Degree or higher in a related field

Experience: (years required and applicable field of experience):
- Minimum of two years experience with a background in health or pre-health professions, health science or health career advising, or graduate health science or professional program admissions;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Excellent interpersonal skills and professionalism with the ability to communicate honestly and empathetically with students about their academic and professional assessments, requirements for success, and realistic academic and professional development planning; and with external partners and employers;
- Commitment to the values and mission of Saint Mary's College.
