Job Description

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Veterans Education and Transition Services office (VETS). This position is responsible for supervision of student worker staff in the VETS office. They will provide leadership and direction as needed to the classified staff and as directed by the assistant director. Oversight includes ensuring proper guidance to students is performed consistent with veteran’s administration programs, processing of enrollment and applications, reporting as required by external agencies which includes United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), NSHE, and State of Nevada as required.

Provide support for tactical and strategic planning pertaining to the veteran student population. Support the Assistant Director and CSN administration in developing collaborative community partnerships that enables the college to attract and retain veteran students.

Work cohesively with the CSN community, the Program Manager will be responsible for development of internal training and overall awareness of staff and faculty to effectively respond to the needs, sometimes specialized, of this targeted population: and to develop programs and activities to support veteran students to achieve their goals and the CSN administration in developing collaborative community partnerships that enables the college to attract and retain veteran students.

In the absence of the assistant director, will provide leadership and direction for the VETS office and represent the assistant director.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university; OR a combination of education and experience.

  • 3 years student support and engagement experience.

  • 1 year lead or supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with the Veteran student population.

  • Knowledge of VA Education Benefits.

The duties, knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Knowledge of requirements associated with VA education program offerings, requirements, policies, and procedures.

  • Working knowledge of advising, student development, retention, and student success best practices and strategies.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and formal presentations with diverse and special populations.

  • Ability to engage and collaborate with students, staff, faculty, managers, and leaders.

  • Knowledge and experience with a VA processing system, PeopleSoft, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Skill in exercising advanced interpersonal dynamics, especially any special needs in servicing Veterans.

  • Skill in advanced communication techniques including active listening and excellent oral and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work activities.

  • Ability to work well with multicultural and diverse student and employee populations.

  • Ability to handle confrontational issues tactfully and effectively, maintaining objectivity and confidentiality.

  • Skill in utilizing effective mediation, facilitation, and negotiation skills to resolve complex, confidential, and confrontational student/employee issues.

The minimum starting salary is $67,256. The successful candidate may be placed above the minimum based on education and experience.
