Overview
THIS IS A TEMPORARY, HOURLY AS NEEDED POSITION WITHOUT PERMANENT STATUS

This is a CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill temporary, hourly assignments on an as-needed basis. Departments or divisions will refer to the POOL of applications on file to fill temporary assignments as the need arises. You will be contacted by the hiring manager should the department/division be interested in scheduling an interview.

Student Health Services provides medical and mental health services to enrolled students. The mental health program, specifically, provides brief psychotherapy and mental health assessment, mental health workshops and online mental health resources for students.
Minimum Qualifications
A. The minimum of one of the following awarded/conferred from a regionally accredited institution:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in any social science, humanities, mathematics, or natural science discipline or in liberal studies, as appropriate for course; OR
  2. Equivalency:
    1. Bachelor’s degree in business administration or related business majors (accounting, marketing, management, international business, and finance), computer sciences, or education AND at least two years of professional experience related to area of assignment; OR
    2. California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in basic skills, literacy, reading, mathematics, K-12, or an Education Certificate; OR
    3. California Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in the area appropriate for the course AND at least two years of professional experience related to area of assignment; OR
  3. California Community College credential authorizing service as an instructor in the appropriate discipline;
AND

B. Commitment to the community college goals/objectives of providing quality programs and services for students with diverse abilities and interests; personal qualities to work effectively and sensitively in a multicultural environment; awareness and commitment to the special needs of non-traditional students.

C. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Assists in the coordination and implementation of the online services of the Writing Center, including Canvas, the Writing Center website, and social media presence; provides information to students and faculty interested in receiving services.
  2. Updates and manages in consultation with the Director and Asst. Director the Writing Center website.
  3. Provides direction, training, orientation, and mentoring to new tutors, via online Canvas modules and direct, real-time consultation via Zoom; assists in the recruitment and selection of staff and provides recommendations.
  4. Assists in keeping Writing Center services ADA-compliant both online and in person
  5. Assists the Director and Asst. Director in ensuring that all Writing Center services, including those online, are equity-minded and anti-racist.
  6. Coordinates the Directed Learning Activities program in consultation with the Director and Asst. Director, including creating new DLAs in response to faculty requests, updating current DLAs to be ADA-compliant and equity-minded, and coordinating with faculty regarding new DLAs and providing information and publicity about current DLAs.
  7. Assists the Director and Assistant Director in arranging tutoring for students in the Community Partnership programs and centers, including scheduling, outreach, and tutor training.
  8. Performs a variety of administrative and clerical duties; prepares, organizes, and maintains records and files in compliance with District policies and procedures.
  9. Attends meetings and training sessions as required.
  10. Learns and applies emerging technologies and, as necessary, performs duties in an efficient, organized, and timely manner.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Education and experience:
    1. Master’s degree in Humanities or Social Sciences (including, but not limited to English, Communications, or Composition); TESL, TESOL, Applied Linguistics with a TESL emphasis, Linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis or Education with a TESL emphasis; OR
    2. Possession of a California credential authorizing service as an instructor in the appropriate discipline at the community college level
  2. Experience teaching in a college-level academic English or other writing intensive program
  3. Experience in developing instructional support materials, especially for embedded tutors
  4. Commitment to working with students in developmental writing
  5. Experience tutoring in a Writing Center or Learning Assistance Center
  6. Experience working with non-traditional students
  7. Experience presenting workshops to students and faculty on rhetoric and grammar
  8. Experience in the use of instructional technologies for writing
  9. Experience working with computers and basic software (especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and ESL software and websites)
  10. Experience supervising people from diverse backgrounds
  11. Experience working with students with disabilities
  12. Experience developing programs committed to enhancing equity
