The Director of Compliance has oversight of eligibility (NCAA Bylaw 14) and is responsible for ensuring a wide-range of tasks are compliant with NCAA rules and regulations, including but not limited to, evaluating initial eligibility for prospective student-athletes (PSAs) (amateurism), monitoring continuing eligibility of current student-athletes for all sports (about 600 individuals), overseeing the National Letter of Intent process as well as the transfer process.

The position is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Administers the University of Oklahoma's (OU's) National Letter of Intent (NLI) program and financial aid agreements for transfer.
  • Conducts background checks on all incoming PSAs.  These background checks include county, state, and federal criminal checks, national sex offender registry checks, and SSN validations.  
  • Coordinates with each head coach (or his or her designee) to determine if the PSA engaged in any acts involving moral turpitude.
  • Oversees continuing eligibility for all student-athletes, which includes working closely with the Registrar’s Office to ensure each OU student-athlete is in good academic standing and meeting all NCAA progress-toward-degree requirements.
  • Works with the Registrar’s Office to ensure accurate and timely submission of all Academic Progress Program (APP), Academic Progress Rate (APR), and Graduation Success Rate (GSR) data.
  • Drafts NCAA waivers for APP, APR, or GSR point adjustments.
  • Operates Compliance Assistant (CAi). CAi is the NCAA’s database that tracks each student-athlete’s NCAA ID number, recruited status, biographical information, first term of enrollment, total number of terms of attended, seasons of competition used, and aid received in one location. CAi is used to generate OU’s Squad Lists.  
  • Compiles and maintains each team’s Eligibility Report and Squad Lists.  These reports are used to certify the eligibility of each student-athlete, track each student-athletes’ progress-towards-degree, the number of seasons of competition used by each student-athlete, and how much financial aid each student-athlete is receiving, as well as ensure the team stays below its maximum financial aid limitations.
  • Tracks and maintains each team’s roster, ensuring NCAA roster and Title IX sponsorship limits are not exceeded.
  • Assists with the compilation of the annual EADA & Sports Sponsorship Demographic reports.
  • Ensures all student-athletes are enrolled full-time or if they are not that we have the necessary documentation on file from the student-athlete’s main-campus academic advisor to ensure an exception is available.
  • Drafts NCAA waivers for initial eligibility shortcomings, progress-towards-degree deficiencies, and less than full-time enrollment.
  • Drafts NCAA academic waivers as well as medical hardship and medical absence waivers, which includes assembling all necessary medical exemption paperwork.
  • Serves as the Compliance Office’s liaison to several key stakeholders, including the Office of Admissions & Recruitment, Registrar’s Office, International Student Services, and frequent interaction with Title IX & Student Conduct Offices.   
  • Guides each PSA (high school, transfer, or graduate) through the Admissions application and provides guidance to coaches and PSAs on how much merit based financial aid they may qualify for based on their academic profiles.
  • Tracks and updates the Academic Review Committee (ARC) success rate data, as well as the special admissions report that is presented annually to the Athletics’ Council and key main campus partners.
 

Job Requirements

Required Education:   Master's degree, AND: 

  • 12 months in NCAA compliance or related experience.

Skills:

  • Detail oriented for accuracy of data and information. 
  • Able to communicate well and build rapport quickly with students, faculty and staff. 
  • Must be able to read and interpret policy. 
  • Strong initiative to solve problems in a timely manner. 
  • Highly organized and ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines.

Departmental Preferences:

  • Juris Doctor 
  • 1 to 3 years experience applying NCAA Bylaw 14 - Eligibility or related compliance experience
