Job Profile Summary

The Seahawk NEST program is offered at two campus locations to prepare students with intellectual disabilities to complete an individualized academic curriculum which leads to vocational outcomes.

Under limited supervision, this position provides advanced professional support by providing opportunities for Seahawk NEST Academy participants to develop social skills, cultural competence, study skills, and academic skills appropriate for their educational goals and help them develop the skills need to become successful college students. Provide advisement, mentoring support services to participants in the Seahawk NEST Academy. Responsible for career exploration, assistance with completing college and financial aid applications, secondary and post-secondary school course selection, assistance with the college course registration process, and resolution of individual academic issues.

Serves as the liaison between the high schools and Broward College to ensure implementation and successful progress towards project objectives. Collaborate with other campuses and Broward County Schools personnel to provide support and assist in the development of skills and motivation to help participants become successful college students.

This is a temporary position which is contingent upon continuation of grant funding, which is projected to happen no sooner than 2028. The incumbent is subject to annual performance evaluation and grant contract renewal. Performs related duties as assigned

  

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Minimum Experience/Training:

  • Six years of experience in an educational setting and/or related experience teaching, preferably teaching intellectually disabled students.
  • Preferred experience in higher education setting, and knowledge of post-Secondary transition programs.
  • Preferred experience reviewing and understanding assessment, K-12 transcripts, and Individual Education Plans, to determine appropriateness of program.
  • Demonstrated experience in collaborating with service providers, educators, students and parents and preferred experience providing instruction or job coaching in a community-based setting.

Essential Functions:

  • Daily - 20%: Responsible for assisting NEST leadership with onboarding new students, implementing student academic plans and career assessments, and tracks participants’ academic progress and college enrollment documents.
  • Daily - 15%: Coordinates classroom support and student schedules, as well as academic advising and collaborative learning activities; activities promoting completion of post-secondary education, internship/workplace opportunities. Provides progressive, one-on-one advising for college and career planning throughout the institution. Supports students’ college and career readiness goals and discusses student growth across the curriculum.  Follows state and federal grant guidelines and statutory requirements for the program.
  • Daily - 15%: Oversees academic year components by planning, organizing, conducting and presenting group workshops, planning and supervising participants’ attendance at program events, and assist in the recruitment, selection, and retention process for all participants. Plans college tours and other academic year and summer activities as needed.
  • Daily - 15%: Prepares and conducts regular checks to ensure participants are on a satisfactory academic schedule and completing satisfactory academic performance indicators. Plans and facilitates varied projects and assignments through individualized and group work. Initiates and maintains student files as appropriate, updating and evaluating files as new information is received.
  • Other - 10%: Provides ongoing support to students through regular meetings, collaborating with BC faculty and staff and ensuring students are following their degree audit to obtain program goals.
  • Other - 5%: Maintains student data and program data to ensure students are on track during the academic year and summer program(s). Ensures implementation and successful progress towards project objectives by planning and scheduling work activities and effectively using resources.
  • Other - 5%: Collects evaluative program data, including performance records, and assists NEST leadership with submission of necessary reporting as required through the grant funders.
  • Other - 5%: Provides workshop training courses as assigned, conducts ongoing training for peer facilitators.
  • Other - 5%: Assists in creating and processing site-based procurement and requisition requests for projects and programs.
  • Other - 5%: Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, (FERPA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and other applicable state and federal legislation pertaining to accessibility with individuals with disabilities.
  • Ability to converse with a wide range of professionals and demonstrate a positive professional attitude.
  • Ability to build relationships with local employers and students, ability to conduct interactive workshops/presentations.
  • In-depth knowledge and expertise in area of specialization and general knowledge of related areas in the College.
  • Ability to complete tasks requiring complex data management systems.
  • Excellent coordination and communication skills to manage the daily campus workflow of the Seahawk NEST Academy.  
  • Requires advanced knowledge of the career pathways and the various programs of study within Broward College.
  • Requires the ability to present and disseminate data with analysis to various levels in the organization.
  • Ability to plan and manage own workflow, priorities with results accomplished.
