SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The Director of College Equity, Inclusion, and Access is a strategic leader focused on promoting an inclusive and equitable environment for the college. The Director will lead the development and implementation of proactive diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and programs which will support the college’s strategic plan, and engage students, faculty, and staff in building a welcoming and inclusive culture at the college.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

In collaboration with constituent groups, leaders, and stakeholders from across the college, the Director is responsible for the development, coordination, planning, and delivery of programs, trainings, and services that address the needs of students from diverse backgrounds. The Director ensures effective processes and procedures that facilitate dialogue and strengthen a welcoming campus climate of respect, innovation, and commitment to social justice. The Director will provide expertise and consultation to college leadership and relevant constituencies on best practice standards in support of the college’s strategic plan, including strategies on closing equity gaps among students.

The Director also provides leadership, support, programmatic development, and administration for equity efforts at the college, including overseeing the college’s equity and inclusion center in providing a safe space and support system for historically minoritized college students.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives supervision from the Vice President for Student Services or designee.

Management and supervision of program staff, including participating in the program hiring, evaluation, performance intervention and retention of staff members in areas of supervision.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The following duties and responsibilities are typical for this position. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Lead the establishment of a clear long-term strategic vision for the college equity center rooted in best practices, student development theory and social justice. 

Develop and implement diversity, equity, inclusion, and access initiatives that create an inclusive and respectful campus that engages all members of the college community, including, but not limited to, college leadership, faculty, staff, and students, in developing and implementing these initiatives.

Assist committees with the implementation of professional development activities related to equity and inclusion.

Provide expertise and consultation to college leadership and relevant constituencies on best practice standards to continually improve planning, policies, and services that align with DEIA initiatives.

Collaborate with Student Services and the Office of Instruction to bring focus to and/or develop initiatives for addressing the elimination of equity gaps in student achievement needs; facilitate the use of disaggregated data and other equity data to measure, assess and track the college’s progress in addressing gaps in access, inclusiveness, and achievement.

Organize, attend or chair a variety of college equity committees and/or meetings related to assigned areas of responsibility.

Advocate to college leadership on diversity, equity, inclusion, and access including strategies for closing and/or improving student equity gaps.

Coordinate and manage the staff and operations of assigned areas.

Manage the development, administration, implementation, and evaluation of program and service operations of assigned areas such as Basic Needs, Undocumented Liaison, LGBTQ+ Coordinator, and cohort programs for underrepresented student groups.

Develop, prepare, administer, monitor and review annual budgets for all assigned programs.

Coordinate with the Student Development Office to provide support and guidance to campus recognized cultural and identity-based student organizations.

Work closely with academic department chairs and other faculty to support and complement academic courses and programs with special lectures and events.

Expand and deepen relationships with academic departments and campus offices to build capacity and cultural fluency to better serve historically minoritized college students.

Partner with the Office of Planning, Research, and Accreditation to conduct needs assessments to identify justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion issues that are not currently being addressed, with an emphasis for supporting and/or improving equity gaps of diverse student populations; collaborate interdepartmentally to implement initiatives to meet identified needs.

Train, supervise, evaluate, and direct the work of personnel as assigned.

Participate in hiring committees as assigned; develop and provide orientation for new employees within assigned areas.

Maintain relationships and collaborate with external and internal stakeholder groups to promote and advance DEIA, including legislative leaders and organizations.

Keep informed of changes and developments in the areas of DEIA including in legislative and legal areas.

Keep relevant campus stakeholders informed of such changes and developments.

Perform other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position and the District's mission and philosophy.

Report to work on a regular and consistent basis, as scheduled, to assigned job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:

Bachelor's degree in education related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access (DEIA), ethnic studies, social justice, cultural studies, critical race studies, gender studies, queer studies, disability studies, multicultural education, psychology/counseling, sociology, anthropology, or related field,. Master’s degree in related field desired.

Experience:

Two years of progressively responsible experience related to the duties and responsibilities listed above.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Leadership experience in multicultural, social justice education, and leadership development programs in a college or university setting including experience working in a multicultural environment.

Skills to communicate and work with diverse constituencies, particularly in program and service development, implementation, and assessment.

Experience with fiscal, unit operational and supervisory responsibilities.

Evidence of leadership in developing and administering training programs on various DEIA related topics to promote individual and organizational growth and development.

Knowledge of student development, identity development, multicultural, and social justice education.

Broad knowledge of social justice concepts, practices, and experience in articulating the intersections of identities.

Evidence of working in a complex multi-layered higher education organization with diversity in people, policies, and programs.

Experience in providing an inclusive work/educational environment to faculty, staff, and students.

Advance skills to effectively lead and facilitate group discussions; lead small group training sessions and engage in public speaking.

Strong conflict resolution and restorative justice skills.

Evidence of mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.

Experience teaching or facilitating workshops at the college/university level.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

A valid California driver’s license and proof of insurability may be required for some positions to drive a District or personal vehicle to attend meetings or pick up/deliver documents or other materials.

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting. Duties are typically performed at a desk or computer terminal; subject to noise from office equipment operation; frequent interruptions and contact in person and on the telephone with academic and classified staff and others. At least minimal environmental controls are in place to assure health and comfort.

Physical Demands:

Must frequently sit for long periods; use hands and fingers to handle keyboard or other objects; reach with hands and arms. Must speak clearly and distinctly to ask questions and provide information; hear and understand voices over the telephone and in person; and respond quickly and effectively to campus emergencies. Must see and hear adequately to perform accurate mental assessments of students or others. Lift, carry, and/or move objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
