Job Summary

The Dean is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and direction of the Dental College, ensuring the highest quality education and research programs, as well as providing effective administration and fiscal management. The Dean will serve as the chief executive of the College and will lead the College in the development and support of strong educational, research, and clinical programs appropriate to the College's mission. The Dean will also be responsible for implementing University and College policies, overseeing all support services for the College and addressing the needs of students, faculty and staff. The Dean will foster the establishment of strategic goals of the College, coordinating the departments to achieve the College's mission in alignment with the initiatives to continue to advance research, patient care and academic programs. The Dean will also guide the College through a positive cultural shift with the support of administration and dedicated faculty, staff, and students.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of the Dean position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Provides leadership and direction for the College, including academic programs, research, clinical services, and community outreach
  • Fosters a culture of excellence, transparency, compassion, integrity, and respect within the College
  • Develops and implements strategic plans for the College in alignment with the mission and goals of the university Oversees the recruitment, retention, and development of faculty, staff, and students - recruiting and retaining a highly qualified and diverse faculty, staff, and student body
  • Ensures the accreditation and compliance with all relevant regulatory agencies
  • Develops and manages the budget and financial resources of the Dental College
  • Serves as a representative of the College to internal and external stakeholders, including alumni, donors, industry partners, and government officials
  • Collaborates with other academic and administrative leaders within the university to promote interdisciplinary research and education
  • Promotes and supports diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the College and across the University
  • Develops and maintains strong partnerships with external organizations and stakeholders


Required Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be an, educator, clinician, and researcher with an understanding oral health care delivery and the search for new knowledge.

The Dean will hold a D.M.D. or D.D.S. and a license to practice dentistry in one of the fifty United States or Puerto Rico.

In addition, the successful candidate should ideally possess the following:
  • Significant experience in academic dentistry, with progressive leadership experience
  • A deep understanding of and advocation for trends and innovation in treatment services to attract faculty, effectively teach, and/or expose students to advances in treatment and issues surrounding those advancements in dental care
  • A sense of how evolving treatment trends impact the college's technology and financial needs in order to advocate for those needs
  • The ability and commitment to drive positive cultural change
  • A record of scholarship and the ability to understand and nurture the growth of faculty/student research to advance the research mission
  • Experience and success with extramural grant proposal writing
  • Superb communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability and willingness to engage in advancement and fund-raising for the College
  • A commitment to a culturally diverse academic environment for faculty, staff, and students
  • A commitment to and proven record of nurturing a distinguished and diverse faculty and staff
  • The willingness to continue to assess the curriculum of the College and examine its delivery to students
  • The ability to develop strong working relationships with a broad range of constituencies, including the faculty, staff, students, senior leadership of AU, Board of Regents, alumni, and the Georgia Board of Dentistry
  • A strong understanding of accreditation and regulatory compliance requirements
