JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT
The Veterans Coordinator is primarily responsible for the development, coordination, implementation and assessment of programs and resources to students who are veterans, active duty, Reserve or National Guard service members and dependents. The Coordinator advises and advocates for the veterans and active military students with the overarching goal of supporting military student success, retention, and graduation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Administrative: Maintains the Office of Veterans and military services
-Develops, implements and assesses programs/services to educate and support veterans and military students seeking information regarding academic programs; serves as liaison between veterans and military students and academic programs, or other offices who provide support services.
-Organizes on-going meetings to support veteran services across SSU (i.e., certifying officials, Financial Aid, Registrar, Admissions, EOC, Professional Advising).
-Participates as an active member in the SSU Veterans Advisory committee. Advises the SSU Student Veteran Association chapter.
-May act as SSU Certifying official in collaboration with SSU Financial Aid and other Certifying officials at SSU.
Collaborates with internal departments and external organizations (e.g., Department of Veteran Affairs) to identify opportunities, coordinate resources, and develop programs to support student success and a smooth transition into an academic environment.
-Initiates SSU outreach programs and activities to veterans and members of the U.S. Armed Forces to support their transition into college coursework.
-Maintains Office of Veterans website content and marketing materials to educate Veterans, military students and eligible dependents on programs and services.
-Identifies and implements best practices through professional associations and colleagues at other institutions.
2. Advising and training
-Connects Veterans to key resource departments related to student veterans (such as academic advising, orientation, disability services, counseling center, VA Certifying Officials, Financial Aid, Career Services).
-Understands and communicates with the veterans, military students and their dependents on their requirements for Certification and to ensure proper processing of the GI educational benefits in accordance with federal and state regulations. Maintains an on-going communication with the Financial Aid offices and all VA Certifying Officials concerning the needs of enrolled veterans, military students or eligible dependents.
-Advises the Veterans Club on campus.
-Provides small group training sessions as needed.
3. Programming and services
-Plans and develops programs and events to support student Veterans needs.
-Participates in orientation.
-Implements veteran recognition and appreciation events.
4.Communication, data management and assessment
-Develops consistent communications with the current student population served by the office.
-Works collaboratively with the community and off-campus partners which support veterans.
-Assists and improves the veteran data collection to improve outreach efforts.
-Lead person on completing national assessments and benchmarking to gain “military or veteran friendly” status for Shawnee State University.
