Job Description Summary
To provide leadership, project management, strategic planning and implementation of outreach efforts for the Gallaudet University Regional Center (GURC) for the Midwest region; to work closely with other regional GURC directors to ensure a unified approach to planning and programming; implement the Annual Goals provided by Gallaudet University through specified scopes of work; and partner with Austin Community College (ACC) on issues related to deaf education and interpreter education.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT INTERVIEWS FOR THIS POSITION:
• Fluency in American Sign Language is required for this position. The interviews will be conducted in ASL with questions asked to the candidate in ASL and the candidate expected to respond in ASL.

GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY BACKGROUND
Unique to Gallaudet University, the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center provides information, training, and technical assistance for families and professionals to meet the needs of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The Clerc Center has been mandated by Congress in the Education of the Deaf Act (EDA) to provide information, training, and technical assistance for parents and personnel throughout the nation to meet the needs of children who are deaf or hard of hearing with a broad spectrum of needs. The Clerc Center also maintains two demonstration schools, Kendall Demonstration Elementary School and the Model Secondary School for the Deaf, and oversees the work of the Gallaudet University Regional Centers (GURCs), a national network of outreach and service. In addition, the Clerc Center is expected to establish and publish priorities for research, development, and dissemination. It is also expected to maintain exemplary elementary and secondary educational programs and to develop, evaluate, and disseminate innovative curricula, materials, instructional techniques, and strategies that can be used in various educational environments. The Clerc Center and Gallaudet University collaborate in areas such as research, curriculum, and instruction, and seek opportunities to build on those partnerships on an ongoing basis.

MISSION STATEMENT
The Clerc Center, a federally funded national deaf education center, ensures that the diverse population of deaf and hard of hearing students (birth through age 21) in the nation are educated and empowered and have the linguistic competence to maximize their potential as productive and contributing members of society. This is accomplished through early access to and acquisition of language, excellence in teaching, family involvement, research, identification and implementation of best practices, collaboration, and information sharing among schools and programs across the nation.

Job Description:

Description of Duties & Tasks

●      Leads the GURC for the Midwest Region, actively serving as a Gallaudet University, Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center (the Clerc Center), and ACC representative to Deaf and hard of hearing students, families, communities, stakeholders, and the educators and other professionals who work with them.

●      Develops, in collaboration with the Clerc Center, ACC and other GURC Directors, a vision and related actions plans for training, workshops, collaborations, and projects that will further advance the missions of both the Clerc Center and ACC.

●      Raises awareness, through intentional outreach strategies, of the resources and programs available to deaf and hard of hearing individuals through the Clerc Center, Gallaudet University, and ACC utilizing a wide professional network. Initiates and maintains a wide variety of professional contracts in order to remain abreast of developments in the field and to promote visibility of and disseminate information about Gallaudet University resources and programs, the Clerc Center, and other regional partners at exhibits, conferences, workshops, and during professional presentations.

●      Develops regional and national outreach initiatives through Gallaudet University's Annual Goals with specific scopes of work that align with the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center's Strategic Plan, and works closely with other GURC directors around the country to ensure a unified approach to planning and programming.

●      Serves as a liaison with the Gallaudet University admissions office to share the needs of ACC as a host program, and the students enrolled. Provides assistance for prospective deaf students or interpreter training program students interested in applying to ACC or Gallaudet University, and once accepted, assists in the enrollment process when appropriate. Partners with Gallaudet University's Office of Admissions and Youth Programs to assist in recruitment efforts or promoting programs (e.g., travels to specified events, attends transition/college fairs/conferences to exhibit).

●      Develops a comprehensive social media and communications strategy to raise the visibility of the center throughout the region and internally at ACC. Utilizes technology to maintain networks and enhance communication (e.g., websites, online communities, videoconferencing, creating flyers and promotional materials, etc).

●      Collaborates with others (e.g., Vocational Rehabilitation Offices) to ensure that Gallaudet resources, initiatives, training programs, and resources are disseminated to educators and families in a variety of educational environments and a broad array of settings. Stays well-informed about the academic, service, and support programs at Gallaudet and all training, publications, outreach, partnership, enrollment, and recruitment initiatives underway.

●      Demonstrates exceptional customer service, both to the national constituency and to teachers, staff, families, and alumni of Gallaudet University; responds promptly to inquiries and requests for training and technical assistance, planning assistance, or other services.

●      Supervises personnel as identified (e.g., staff, student assistants, volunteers).

●      Develops and monitors budget and annual plans for GURC South Midwest; manages financial paperwork properly; provides budget information and quarterly financial and activity reports to Gallaudet University. Leads efforts to seek additional funding, identify and develop grant proposals, and implements activities that will generate additional revenue for the Center.

●      Serves as an active, contributing member of ACC, Gallaudet University, and the Clerc Center.

●      Promotes ACC student success and services by inviting ACC representatives to promote their programs alongside GURC-Midwest at events.

●      Uses Gallaudet University's Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to document all regional outreach contacts and activities according to established procedures and timelines.

●      Participates on various committees for statewide conference planning, statewide association for the deaf support, and local organizations to provide deaf community support.

●      Two years related work experience in coordination of professional programs and services in serving Deaf and hard of hearing students, families, professionals, alumni, and the schools/agencies involved. Education cannot be substituted for supervisory experience.

Preferred Work Experience

●      More than two years work experience in coordination of professional programs and services in serving deaf and hard of hearing students, families, professionals, alumni, and the schools/agencies involved.

Required Education

●      Master's degree in education, counseling, administration, or Deaf or hard of hearing-related field.

Special Requirements

  • Valid Texas Driver's License and reliable transportation needed for local Austin area travel.

  • Some local and out of state travel is required.

Physical Requirements

  • Work is routinely performed in office environments.

  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.

  • Manual dexterity to use sign language.
