We are looking for a hard-working postdoctoral appointee researcher to join our team. Our mission is to advance computing hardware for a range of Sandia's mission partners, providing significant improvements in performance, cost, reliability, and power consumption for a wide range of applications. Every day in our team is different because of rapid technological change in the industry. We work at the leading edge of hardware design to provide future directions for Sandia's computing users. You will help design and optimize heterogenous computer architectures leveraging novel computing hardware to enable high-performance in and space, weight, and power (SWaP) constrained systems. This will involve working with algorithm and application experts to codesign architectures for high reliability in high-consequence, safety-critical systems. Our team is analyzing performance requirements for future autonomous systems and developing novel computing accelerators, including accelerators based on analog hardware. On any given day you’ll be asked to: + Develop novel edge system architectures for high-performance SWaP-constrained systems. + Work with experts across the computing stack, from devices to algorithms, to codesign architectures to maximize performance and efficiency. + Contribute to the development of SST, Sandia’s architectural simulator framework ( http://sst-simulator.org/ ), Sandia’s analog computing simulator ( https://cross-sim.sandia.gov/ ), and/or associated modules to analyze novel architectures. + Estimate energy, reliability, area, and cost of simulated components. + Use architectural simulators to analyze workloads and applications relevant to autonomous systems for both general purpose systems and Sandia’s Mission activities. + Prepare timely reports, papers, and presentations describing significant results for dissemination within the broader computer architecture research community. Qualifications We Require: + Possess, or are pursuing, a PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field, (PhD must be conferred within five years prior to employment ) + Experience with processor, memory, hardware accelerators, or other hardware components + Experience in developing hardware modeling and simulation tools (SST, Gem5, FireSim, etc) to characterize performance + Evidence of relevant technical expertise in computer science and/or computer engineering via peer-reviewed publications, research, patents, and/or technical advances + Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level securityclearance Qualifications We Desire: + Experience with edge computing designs and managing power and performance tradeoffs. + Knowledge of computer architecture trends with a special emphasis on emerging and unconventional computing systems + Experience modeling novel computing hardware including non-von Neumann systems + Experience working on inter-disciplinary teams for system codesign + Experience in hardware prototyping and simulation + Experience with Hardware Description Languages (e.g., SystemVerilog, Chisel, Verilog, etc.) + Proven track record of interpersonal communication skills About Our Team: The Scalable Computer Architectures department leads responsibilities for specifying and developing future generations of high-performance computing systems to meet a broad cross-section of Sandia's national security missions. The team has three principal activities: + Advanced hardware optimization and codesign which includes development of best-of-class simulation and emulation technologies + Advanced architecture testbeds and the Vanguard advanced system prototype projects which deploy first-of-a-kind hardware systems to evaluate the relevance and opportunity to Sandia partners + The application performance team which leads initial application porting and performance evaluation on next-generation computer systems. The department is a source of collaboration and outreach with leading computing vendors and academics, and, collaborates with a broad spectrum of mission organizations to help develop leadership-class hardware solutions Our team is committed to nurturing a culture compatible with a broad group of people and perspectives in accordance with the changing makeup of the workforce.
