What Your Job Will Be Like: Our team is seeking a dedicated postdoctoral appointee to support research of laser-based processes for optical probe characterization and surface modifications. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Plan and perform experiments, install, repair, and maintain diagnostic tools, collect, and analyze data with the goal of understanding how particle size and velocity affect deformation mechanics upon impact + Perform design and characterization necessary to support projects or experiments + Publish journal articles and present work at local and national conferences + Interact and collaborate with other inter-disciplinary research groups within Sandia National Laboratories to develop new research opportunities and projects Qualifications We Require: + Possess, or are pursuing. a PhD in applied physics, materials science, or a related field + Experience in laser irradiation and/or optics research and development + Experience in designing and conducting laser-based experiments involving open beam alignments + Experience with Materials Characterization (Electron/Optical microscopy; Mechanical, and/or Thermal Properties) + Proven track record of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific and/or technical conferences + Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Experience with sensors (IR/UV cameras, Pyrometers, Thermal Imaging cameras, High speed cameras, electron detectors, etc.) and data acquisition + Experience with Data Analytics, Electromagnetic field modelling, and Image Processing (ImageJ, COMSOL, C++, MatLab, Python preferred) + Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills About Our Team: The Advanced Metal Processing Department (1832) provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of laser machining/surface modification, precision engineering, metal additive manufacturing, and implementation of Granta Materials Information. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of components by conventional subtractive machining, additive manufacturing, electrical discharge machining (EDM), laser machining, laser etching/annealing, optical probe measurements as well as technical consulting. Metal additive manufacturing expertise includes alloy development, qualification/acceptance, and design. Current technologies utilized include laser powder bed, wire arc and laser, metal fused deposition (FDM), and directed energy deposition (DED). We support the application and maintenance of the Granta Materials Information database for the Laboratories. Security Clearance:
