The Department of Urban Planning welcomes applications for a full-time instructor to teach 12 hours of courses each semester during the academic year. Courses will include studios and lecture classes in the CAP first-year program along with PLAN 100, Introduction to Planning. These are on-campus classes.

Position Function:
The faculty member will teach primarily in a unique and innovative program targeted at first year students in the College of Architecture and Planning. In this role, faculty will have the opportunity to introduce students to design thinking, while at the same time explaining what is unique and compelling about a career in Urban Planning. The CAP common first year program is a shared framework of in-person studio (CAP 101 and CAP102) and a graphics course (CAP 161) that are shared by faculty members from urban planning, landscape architecture, and architecture. The program is shepherded by a coordinator who mentors and guides all instructors through the shared curriculum, instructional modes, and learning objectives.

Over the years, faculty team members have assembled an archive of projects, resources, videos, readings, rubrics, and other resources to supplement and facilitate the studio instruction. Student learners are challenged to gain awareness and knowledge in a menu of skills and subjects across the environmental design disciplines, including design fundamentals, 2d and 3d composition, design thinking, spatial and formal ordering and organizing systems, sketching, diagramming, drawing conventions, site graphics, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, color theory, collage, model making and craft, human circulation patterns, natural systems, and urban systems. The new hire will also have the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of courses in their areas of specialization outside of the first-year program.


Minimum Qualifications: A degree in planning or related field from an accredited institution.

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience teaching in a studio environment. A master’s degree in urban planning.
