Job Summary
Join our dynamic College of Science Advising Team! This Academic Advisor II will provide student-centered initiatives that support students in the College of Science, while serving as the Lead advisor for the Department of Physics and Astronomy and maintaining a caseload of 250-300 students.
A successful candidate will have experience in advising or other education related fields to support student success. Ideally they will have experience working with faculty or large teams to deliver effective programs and building relationships that foster student success. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated skills in communication, time management, and problem solving. We are looking for a team player who is a quick learner, resilient, and takes initiative.
The College of Science Advising Team provides academic advising for over 3000 undergraduates in 8 departments across the newly merged College of Science and College of Mines and Earth Sciences. Our collaborative model provides structure for advisors to support students across our college, growth and professional development opportunities, and a supportive leadership team dedicated to advising and student success.
Responsibilities
1. Meets with College of Science undergraduate students to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues, such as graduation requirements and exceptions, and course planning and registration.
2. Facilitates students’ academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate educational plans. Makes referrals for students who need assistance with overcoming learning obstacles, tutoring, career decisions, mental health, or other various needs.
3. Uses enterprise-level data analytics and student record technology platforms to monitor student progress. Leads out in the delivery of proactive advising and intervention strategies for assigned student populations.
4. Proficient in degree tracking software, record keeping systems, and advising related technologies
5. Maintains students’ academic files that include a record of advising activity, referrals, exceptions made, transfer courses, etc.
6. Participates in education programs designed to supplement or enhance academic preparedness.
7. Collects and disseminate information to students, faculty, and departments about changes in major requirements or University policies and adjusts advising strategies as appropriate.
8. Participates in the college portion of new student orientation each semester.
9. Coordinate data compilation, statistical reports and correspondence, depending on the area of assignment.
10. Contributes to the selection and training of new advising staff
11. Attend monthly staff meetings and trainings related to advising
12. Serves on university and college committees and makes recommendations that affect curriculum requirements, advising processes, and program development and published materials.
13. Supports the College of Science in admission outreach events and activities
14. Other advising related activities as needed and assigned.
15. In addition, advisors take on additional advising-related departmental responsibilities, which include but at not limited to service on undergraduate program, scholarship, and curriculum committees.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (1 year of education is equivalent to 2 years’ experience).
Two years of direct academic advising experience
Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
