Job Description Summary:

With little direct supervision, provides very complex specialized services and support to Bioscience Incubator.

Job Description:

General Statement of Job

To aid in developing assays, procedures, and strategy for long-term research projects to be housed at the ACC Bioscience Incubator (ABI) related to molecular biology, cell biology, biomanufacturing, and associated disciplines. Develops and optimizes experimental methods which can be utilized by ABI staff in the future. Assists staff in sourcing materials and equipment which may be needed to conduct basic scientific research. Collaborates with ABI staff and other laboratory personnel in laboratory upkeep and experimental procedures.

Description of Duties and Tasks

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assists in design of research project related experiments, techniques, and procedures.
  • Conducts laboratory experimentation and optimizes experimental design, reagents, and processes to answer basic scientific hypotheses.
  • Maintains detailed and accurate laboratory records including notebooks, standard operating procedures, and similar documents.
  • Communicates progress and roadblocks to ABI staff via scientific presentations, reports, and other documents. 
  • General laboratory responsibilities, as needed, such as laboratory maintenance, consumable and reagent sourcing, and training as needed.

 

Knowledge

Must possess required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Familiarity with standard laboratory practices.

  • Knowledge of lab safety protocol and procedures including storage of chemicals.

  • Basic knowledge of foundational concepts of molecular biology, cell biology, or similar discipline.

  • Ability to draft and implement laboratory protocols.

Skills

Technology Skills

  • Use a variety of spreadsheet, word-processing, database, and presentation software. 

  • Use related laboratory equipment and software applications. 

 

Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in a variety of settings including office and laboratory.

  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling and occasionally stooping, crawling, and climbing.

  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 10 pounds.

  • Able to read chemical labels and instructions as well as use lab equipment; able to survey assigned lab spaces for safety issues. 

Required Education

  • High school diploma or educational equivalent; current GPA 2.8 and above.

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in an academic or industry research environment.

 

Other Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven experience with experimental design and hypothesis testing.

  • Ability to conduct common wet laboratory techniques such as DNA cloning, mammalian and bacterial cell culture, western blotting, and qPCR.

  • Work safely and follow safety rules. Report unsafe working conditions and behavior. Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.
