The University of Notre Dame is looking for a strong electrical engineer to lead the electrical engineering efforts in its Engineering and Design Core Facility (EDCF).
The EDCF is a small, committed, fast-moving group of skilled engineers that work closely with Notre Dame faculty and staff on research projects across a wide range of disciplines. As a member of this team, the engineer will have the opportunity to help shape the direction of the facility. This is a unique position and is well suited for a skillful, independent, electrical engineer with an accumulated wealth of experience and a passion for research and development.
The Electrical Engineer (EE) will work with professors and fellow engineers to provide appropriate engineering consultation, experimentation, or instrumentation prototypes to meet specific performance requirements. The EE should have advanced knowledge of and experience with electrical design and simulation software (eg. Altium, Orcad, Kicad,) and an extensive work history that includes numerous successful electrical designs that have met performance specifications and schedule requirements. As part of the EDCF, a EE may be involved in projects from various technical fields (astronomy, chemistry, biology, metrology …). Instrumentation development can require an understanding of electronics, software, firmware, and optics. The EE must be able to independently carry out a project and receive technical guidance only on unusual or complex problems or issues. An engineer with broad experience across multiple disciplines will be best suited for this position. Excellent communication and leadership skills are required.
Essential duties will include:
Electrical system design, including PCB design and layout, simulation, specifications, and tolerancing. Designs may involve both digital and analog circuits and the use of micro controllers. Designs may also involve high-speed digital circuits, RF communications, controlled impedance traces, and impedance matching circuits.
Software and firmware programming, programming, data analysis, and other activities associated with instrumentation development.
Oversight of assembly, testing, optimization, and characterization of newly developed and existing prototype electronic systems. Leads others through the process, including identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving complex problems.
Meet with research staff and other EDCF clients to discuss potential projects and consultations
Train new and current engineers on various procedures and technical aspects of the position; provide mentoring and contribute to the professional development of EDCF team members.
Other responsibilities also include project management, some laboratory work, administrative tasks, and others – depending on the abilities of the employee.
The successful candidate will possess the following:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field required.
7+ years of experience in product development or R&D required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
Applicant must be capable of communicating well with a diverse audience.
Experience with electrical codes (NEC,NFPA, IEC) standards is desired.
Attention to detail is a key requirement.
PE license is not required. Preference will be given to engineers that have a broad engineering background and RF design experience and/or cross-discipline engineering expertise.
