Summary
Responsible for operation of a specialized laboratory with one or more faculty members within a department and/or works in specialized research area. May act as liaison with other departments, divisions, or organizations. Develops, designs, and conducts one or more small or moderately complex research experiments in line with plan, reviews progress and evaluates results. Formulates research methods and suggests options for improving quality, identifies potential problems, recommends, and implements solutions, and collaborates in the development of new techniques. Trains users in equipment operation and laboratory techniques, explains and demonstrates technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations, and outcomes. Coordinates data collection and screening and verifies the data. Conducts analysis of data, interprets, and implements research methodology based on outcome of analysis. Co-authors publications and may co-present results with Principal Investigator at meetings and/or conferences. Has oversight for day-to-day operation of laboratory and may supervise exempt and non-exempt research and support personnel.

Responsibilities*
The candidate will conduct all mouse model studies with bacterial species causing urinary tract infection including E. coli, Proteus mirabilis and other gram-negative bacterial species. In addition, they will conduct a mouse model of bloodstream infection with six different gram-negative bacterial species.

The candidate will conduct all aspects of animal care including controlling anesthesia inventories for inspection by university and state monitors. They will also supervise any personnel who are assisting any of these procedures. They will keep up to date all personnel who participate in animal studies in the laboratory by enrolling them through eresearch.

They will record all data in notebooks and keeps these data up-to-date for the purpose of publication.

The candidate will maintain the animal protocol with the addition of scientific amendments as needed. Act as contact person for all animal-related lab inspections. Place orders of animals and maintain all related records for use.

Required Qualifications*
The ability to learn and understand basic data analysis, bacteriology techniques, and experimental troubleshooting is important. Accuracy and persistence in carrying out tasks are essential. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are important. The ability to work as part of a team is essential.

Intermediate:

Bachelor's degree with 4-5 years of related experience is required.
1-3 years of laboratory research experience in Biology or Microbiology is required.
Experience with basic molecular biology is needed.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted, including relevant undergraduate and graduate student experience, in lieu of a degree.
