The fungal pathogenesis group of Dr. Sumant Puri, in the Oral Microbiome Research Laboratory at Temple University, seeks a motivated postdoctoral associate for a NIH R01 funded project. The group’s research focuses on the effect of host iron on microbial pathogenesis and innate immunity during oropharyngeal candidiasis caused by the pathogenic yeast Candida albicans. The lab uses a variety of classical biochemical techniques and molecular biology tools in conjunction with immunological techniques and vertebrate/invertebrate animal infection models to address this role of iron in infection and immunity (PMID: 32503842, PMID: 30718249; sample publications).

The candidate should have a PhD in microbiology/biochemistry, or an associated discipline, and must have experience in pathogenesis and biochemistry of C. albicans. Extensive experience is also required with the use of murine models, preferably with mice models of oropharyngeal candidiasis; as well as with Caenorhabditis elegans infection models.

The postdoctoral associate will be provided with mentorship in an interdisciplinary environment of Temple University’s Health Science Center that is home to four of Temple's medical-related schools and colleges. The associate is expected to work independently in driving the research project forward, from experiment-planning to data analysis. Additional duties will include mentorship of students, writing of manuscripts, and routine lab maintenance.
