College/Department Information

Our faculty study a variety of fundamental questions ranging from neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders, functions of the nervous system and regenerative medicine, using a broad repertoire of experimental approaches. A number of doctoral students of Neuroscience and Molecular Medicine PhD Programs are doing their thesis research in the department. The department is also a major contributor to Augusta University's Center for Healthy Aging, a multidisciplinary consortium whose mission to improve and restore function to injured and degenerating tissues of the human body. The department places a strong emphasis on translational research with collaborations with multiple clinical departments including Neurology, Psychiatry, Orthopaedic Surgery, Neurosurgery and Medicine.

Job Summary
A training position designed to learn through engagement in an advanced level of scientific technical and administrative work in support of research efforts in an assigned laboratory or clinical research setting. Participate in research data collection and documentation within relevant guidelines and protocols; develop and evaluate new research techniques and procedures; publish results in scientific journals. Perform a variety of complex procedures of biochemistry, molecular biology, mouse genetics, microscopic imaging, histology, bioinformatics, and functional genomics.

Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to: Global Cerebral Ischemia in male and female rats; Neonatal hypoxia-schemia model in rat and mouse; Thrombotic ischemia/stroke mode in rat and mouse; Traumatic brain injury model and the transgenic Alzheimer's disease ageing model in rat as well as the brain infarct volume assessment. Certain drug tratments via IP and/or IV and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) irradiation treatment; Brain histology analyses; Immunohistochemistry on brain sections; Histological evaluation; Immunofluorescense staining and confocal microscopy; Brain tissue homogenates and western blots/immunopecipitations using the protein samples; Quantification of ATP production levels; Measurement of Caspase-6/9 and Caspase-3 activity as well as data analysis; Doulink II proximity ligation assay and electron microscopic analaysis. Use the tests of elevated plus maze, open firld, morris water maze and barnes maze tests; Cylinder test and adhesive test; Will also analyze the behavioral results, interpret data and confer with PI on research plans related to learning and memory. Summarize and evaluate research findingd; Compose scientific publications for scientific journals; Review articles for scientific journals. Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in research, basic science or clinical laboratory particularly clinical trial research. OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years' research and/or clinical experience; previous supervisory experience.

Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases or willingness to learn

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required)

Pay Grade: R14

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
