Job Description

Position Highlights:

  • The Manager of Research Grants Financial Management oversees the Grants Management team of Research Financial Analysts (RFAs) providing research activity support for all of Research.
  • This position is the expert on grants and the “go to” person for guidance on grant expenditures and effort reporting.
  • Management expectations include recruiting, training, employee development, performance management and evaluation.
  • The position collaborates with various research administration departments to ensure training is current and consistent across the institution.

 

Ideal Candidate:

  • Familiarity with procedures and expectations for large peer-reviewed funding agencies (e.g., NIH/NCI, DOD)
  • Knowledge and experience with fiscal management of routine and complex grant submissions, including multi-institutional grants and subcontracting
  • Understanding of full the grants process cycle, including pre-and post-award procedures
  • Ability to rapidly assess funding opportunity announcements and requirements
  • SRA or NCURA (or equivalent) membership/participation
  • Experience in mentoring and training is required to mentor existing staff and train new staff
  • Knowledge of grant budgets, subcontracts, federal effort reporting, policies and regulations for grants, ability to multi-task and work under deadlines
  • Strong writing and editing, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficient business software skills including Microsoft Office

 

Responsibilities:

  • Implements processes, procedures and metrics to more effectively support investigators while fully meeting federal guidelines and other financial or regulatory requirements.
  • Periodically reviews all policies and updates them as appropriate, working with other offices (Research Finance, Sponsored Research, Corporate Compliance) as needed.
  • Manages the financial oversight of all grant activities and revenues received to support research initiatives, ensuring staff work with investigator and leadership to accurately forecast expenses, assign and monitor effort, and monitor expenses.
  • Collaborates with Supervisor & Sr. Director on identifying departmental cost savings driven by workflow efficiencies.
  • Direct supervision along with supervisors of personnel which includes work allocation, training and problem resolution. Motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  • In collaboration with supervisor or lead, identifies, hires and trains RFAs and ensures succession plans and continuous PI coverage and support.
  • Shares information with administrative team and faculty related to process changes and provides training and guidance during the implementation of the new process.
  • Maintains the orientation and education process for RFAs, which requires maintain awareness of sponsor and organization requirements, trends and best practices.
  • Provides RFAs with guidance on development of grant budgets, efforts allocation, grant activity management and reconciliation, and interpretation of sponsor guidelines.
  • Provides Research Fiscal & Business Program Administrator with guidance on appropriate and strategic utilization of fund portfolio.
  • Works closely with Corporate Compliance and Research Finance to ensure top level services in a collaborative environment.

 

Credentials and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical/Scientific, Business Administration or related field required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of pre/post award related experience in an academic/research setting.
  • Minimum 2 years of leadership experience as a team/project lead, supervisor, manager or above, preferred 3 years of supervisory or leadership experience.
