Under supervision, perform duties related to work in electrical/high voltage maintenance, which involves work in excess of 600 volts, complying with appropriate regulations and codes.

Job Function:

Under supervision, perform duties related to work in electrical/high voltage maintenance, which involves work in excess of 600 volts, complying with appropriate regulations and codes.

Minimum Education:

1. High school diploma or equivalent (GED).

Preferred Education:

1.Associates Degree in Electrical Technology

Minimum Experience:

1.Successful completion of an apprenticeship program in Electricity as approved by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training and two years of post-apprenticeship electrical experience and one year verified proof of experience operating and maintaining energized electrical systems of 4,160 volts or higher, or five (5) years of electrical experience and one (1) of year of operating and maintaining energized electrical systems of 4,160 volts or higher, or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable job knowledge can be acquired as determined by Ball State University.
2.Must be able to read and comprehend all specified policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials information, and University policies, procedures and communications, have basic oral/written communication skills, and perform basic mathematical calculations at the level equivalent to first year high school algebra.
3.Must possess basic computer and spread sheet skills.
4.Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License and be insurable under the university’s auto fleet policy..
5.Must be able to perform all mental and physical requirements as outlined in each job duty.
6.Must be able to respond and be on campus within a reasonable time as determined by Ball State University in an emergency situation.
7.You must be 18 years or older.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair the university’s 600 volt, 5 kV and 15 kV distribution systems as required; including electrical manhole sump pumps, transformer vaults, switchgear, fuses, substation equipment, circuit breakers, SF6 vault switches, pad mounted transformers and other components of the campus High Voltage Distribution System.
  • Switch loads at vault switches, operate load break elbows at transformers, switch internal building loads, and maintain power and control apparatus.
  • Comprehend, maintain, and utilize campus distribution maps, one-line diagrams, power riser diagrams, control diagrams, equipment specifications and instructions while performing related job functions.
  • Troubleshoot, clean, maintain, repair, and operate the university emergency lighting and power systems as required; including generators, automatic and manual transfer switches, UPS equipment, central inverters, batteries, unit battery exit, emergency lights and distribution and branch circuit panelboards.
  • Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install electrical conduits and raceways for systems from one half inch up to 6 inch in diameter.
  • Install switches, wiring devices, controls, transformers, distribution apparatus, and install and terminate wires and cables for conductors from size 18 AWG up to 500 KCM rated 300 to 15,000 volts. Phase check, balance, and terminate circuits as required.
  • Perform appropriate electrical tests and measurements and analysis of equipment and systems, and report results for evaluation by engineers; including, fluke meters, VLF high potential test, resistive load bank tests automated metering equipment, manual recording of parameters, infrared imaging equipment, and using a personal computer for spread sheets, word processing, ETAP data base, e-mail, and internet research.
  • Provide electrical power for temporary events and scheduled/unscheduled power interruptions as required. This may involve overtime and/or weekend work.
  • Clean, maintain, inventory and manage all department tools and equipment; report all missing components to the supervisor.
  • Acquire and maintain knowledge of various job chemicals, environmental concerns, applicable codes and new technologies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned which may arise from time to time.
