The Augusta University/University of Georgia (AU/UGA) Medical Partnership is looking for a full-time dynamic, innovative academic scholar with evidence of teaching success and academic administrative experience for the position of Chair of Clinical Sciences. The ideal candidate will have strong interdisciplinary experience, knowledge of medical school curriculum including understanding of LCME accreditation requirements, demonstrated excellence in teaching and research/scholarship, and experience establishing collaborations with clinicians and basic scientists. The Chair of Clinical Sciences requires a proven track record of mentoring junior faculty with success in supporting faculty in the promotion and tenure process. The candidate should possess outstanding leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills with the ability to think strategically and build consensus.

Duties and responsibilities of the Chair of Clinical Sciences position will include mentoring junior faculty and promoting excellence in teaching and scholarship amongst the Clinical Sciences faculty at the AU/UGA Medical Partnership. The Chair of Clinical Sciences will work collaboratively with the Campus Associate Dean for Curriculum, Chair of Basic Sciences, and other leadership at the AU/UGA Medical Partnership to uphold the vision and missions of the AU/UGA Medical Partnership, Augusta University, and the University of Georgia.

In addition to the Chair of Clinical Sciences responsibilities, the candidate is expected to teach in our Undergraduate Medical Education curriculum as part of the four-year medical school program in the areas of clinical skills, community and population health, and in large group learning and small group facilitation. There may also be opportunities to participate in clinical care in an outpatient setting. The Chair of Clinical Sciences reports directly to the Campus Dean of the AU/UGA Medical Partnership.

The position is a non-tenure track appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities
  1. Promote a diverse and inclusive culture of academic excellence and a positive workplace environment. Assist with recruiting faculty and staff at the AU/UGA Medical Partnership that support these same ideals.
  2. Support strategic initiatives of the AU/UGA Medical Partnership and special projects as assigned by the Campus Dean.
  3. Serve as primary supervisor for Clinical Sciences faculty with responsibilities of conducting annual performance evaluations and assisting faculty in setting yearly goals for teaching, scholarship, and service with inputs from the Office of Curriculum as appropriate. This position is expected to work collaboratively with the Campus Associate Dean for Curriculum to ensure all curriculum needs are achieved. The Campus Associate Dean for Curriculum will hold a supervisory capacity in defining and implementing curriculum leadership and teaching roles.
  4. Mentor and support junior Clinical Sciences faculty at the AU/UGA Medical Partnership in support of promotion and tenure.
  5. Participate in medical student teaching in the various components of the curriculum, e.g., clinical skills, community and population health, and large and small group learning.
  6. Remain active in educational scholarly pursuits and promote scholarly activity by faculty and students.
  7. Develop and oversee the annual Office of Clinical Sciences budget in collaboration with the Office of Finance & Operations at the AU/UGA Medical Partnership.


Required Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Doctor of Medicine degree from an accredited school of medicine.
  • Board certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties (when appropriate).
  • Ability to obtain an unrestricted medical license in the state of Georgia and to obtain appropriate hospital credentials and privileges (when appropriate).
  • Ability to obtain an unrestricted Drug Enforcement Administration license (when appropriate).
  • Credentials as a scholar, educator, and leader.
  • Leadership experience in academic medicine with evidence of medical education teaching.
  • Hold a current academic appointment of at least Associate Professor for a minimum of five (5) years.
  • Knowledge of LCME accreditation.

Associate Professor - Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at rank of Assistant Professor or comparable training, background, and experience

Professor - Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.

Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
  • Evidence of ability as a teacher;
  • Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
  • Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
  • Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.

The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.

Associate Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
