Do you have an academic vision for the future direction of Data Science and AI research at the University of Leeds to address global challenges? Are you excited by the prospect of leading interdisciplinary research that will create a positive research culture and generate social impact ?

As a member of LIDA’s Executive Group, you will work alongside the LIDA Co-Directors to influence UEG and senior stakeholders in Schools and Faculties in the further development and implementation of a research and innovation strategy for LIDA. The duties of this role require a time commitment of one day a week, for a fixed term of 2 years in the first instance.

Background to LIDA

There is a growing movement around the world to ensure the effective use of vast data collections to drive research, policy development and public good initiatives. At LIDA our mission, aligned with the University’s strategy, is to exploit data science and AI to generate societal impact.

Leeds Institute for Data Analytics (LIDA) is the home of Data Science and AI at the University of Leeds. Our role is to bring together applied research groups and data scientists from all Faculties and disciplines, to conduct inter-disciplinary and impact-oriented research, education and training, applying cutting-edge data science, machine learning and AI to real-world problems.

Our portfolio of data analytics research and innovation projects is worth over £80 million, with multi-disciplinary communities of >300 researchers engaged across different communities, programmes and specialist interest areas. LIDA’s research communities are currently focused on three main challenge areas that require interdisciplinary working: Societies, Health and Environment. Supporting these communities are four cross cutting programmes of work that focus on exploiting and developing our capabilities and capacity within four key methodological data analytics areas ; Statistical Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Immersive Technologies and Data Science Infrastructures.

LIDA works to ensure the effective use of vast data collections to drive research, policy development and public good initiatives; connecting academic research and education with external partners in business, government and the third sector. The last five years have seen a host of organisations make use of LIDA’s expertise including Sainsbury’s, Asda, YouGov and Leeds City Council, to facilitate research that makes a real difference.

LIDA also has a growing education and training portfolio helping to address the national skills gap in data analytics, including: MSc Data Science (statistics), Data Science Development Training programmes and hosts Centres for Doctoral Training.

LIDA is underpinned by cutting edge highly secure data science and AI analytic services, located in a collaborative, multidisciplinary setting, to a growing portfolio of research projects and education and training programmes from across the University, including those involving highly sensitive and confidential data.
