The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at James Madison University invites applications for two 10-month tenure-track positions in mathematics or applied mathematics at the assistant professor level to begin in August 2024. We are particularly interested in candidates with interests or expertise that can contribute to our new computational analytics minor and/or data science concentration.
Our energetic, collegial department is home to 55 full-time faculty in the areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education. Our programs provide meaningful learning experiences for majors and non-majors alike, both within and outside of the classroom. We care about people and value high-quality undergraduate education. We currently offer Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Statistics, minors in Mathematics, Statistics, and computational analytics, and are the core group offering a minor in Data Science. Scholarship in a variety of forms is supported and valued across all disciplines represented in the department. We have a strong history of supporting undergraduate research, including running a well-established NSF-funded REU program (started in 2002) and hosting a large annual undergraduate research conference (started in 2005). Department faculty are also invested in multiple outreach efforts to the local and disciplinary communities.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be committed to engaged teaching of students of all backgrounds, developing or continuing a research program that may include undergraduate research, and contributing to the department though service appropriate to career stage. The teaching load is approximately 9 contact hours per semester and will consist primarily of a variety of courses based on faculty interest and department need or teaching-related special assignments. The results of scholarly interests will be disseminated in the form of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations; involving undergraduates in appropriate research projects is highly valued. Appropriate departmental, college and/or university service will be based on interest and need.
Ph.D. in mathematics, applied mathematics, or a closely related field by time of appointment.
Demonstrated excellence in (or clear potential for) teaching undergraduate mathematics courses.
Demonstrated commitment to developing or continuing an active research agenda.
Potential for seeking external funding, perhaps through interdisciplinary collaboration with other faculty.
Potential for excellence in mentoring undergraduates in scholarly activities and career paths.
Demonstrated interest in or potential for supporting the department, college, and university in appropriate service positions.
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
A demonstrated commitment towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
(Preferred) Demonstrated interest and expertise in contributing to computational analytics and/or data science curricula.
