Job Summary
The Campus Assistant Dean for Pre-Clerkship Curriculum is responsible for pre-clerkship curricular management, faculty development, and all aspects of preclinical medical education on the AU/MCG-GS Savannah Partnership campus. They will successfully demonstrate mastery of the requisite knowledge to teach across multiple systems, including cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal digestive, genitourinary, endocrine, and neurology. They will work closely with the Office of Academic Affairs and pre-clinical education leadership to create a preclinical experience that is academically enriched and ensures that all students achieve the knowledge, skills and professionalism across all years of the MD curriculum. This position is a non-tenure track administrative faculty with rank position. Ranks available are Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor commensurate with experience, education, and credentials.
Responsibilities
Administrative - 80%
Participate in the collaborative design, delivery, and oversight of multiple team-taught organ system modules in the pre-clinical phase to ensure quality and consistency of instruction for M1/M2 students across the AU/MCG-GS Savannah Partnership curriculum.
Work closely with other clinical and basic science faculty to develop and deliver an integrated curriculum within and across the modules.
Be up to date on current Step 1 content and ensure that this information is prominently emphasized in the appropriate modules.
Oversight of the pre-clinical years of medical school on the Savannah campus, in partnership with the Campus Dean and Associate Dean for Curriculum, Curriculum Assistant Deans, Clinical Performance Exams (OSCEs), new competency-based curriculum development and First Year Electives.
Responsible for medical educator faculty recruitment, ensuring that faculty from all departments are supported, committed and engaged in the teaching process.
Work closely with MCG Associate Dean for Curriculum and Assistant Deans in Curriculum to co-create, develop, and implement new curricular innovations to ensure the MCG students have the core knowledge, skills, and professionalism to be exceptional physicians and prominent world leaders in health and science.
Participate in LCME accreditation activities.
Education and Service - 20%
Serve as module director/course director as needed for specific modules or courses.
Responsible for the delivery of pathophysiology instruction across a range of organ system modules.
Employ a variety of teaching methods including case-based instruction, large- and small-group discussion, lecture, demonstration, and team-based learning.
Provide formative and summative assessment of medical student performance including the development of practice quizzes, flipped classroom sessions, and new/revised items for summative assessment.
Serve on the Pre-clerkship Curriculum Committee as an active member and attend committee meetings related to the medical school curriculum, including Module Directors Committee, Department Chairs Committee, the relevant Promotions Subcommittee, and the Curriculum Oversight Committee.
Be visible and on-site for medical students. Mentor/counsel medical students along with the other teaching faculty to ensure academic success in coordination with Student Affairs.
Engage in scholarship, clinical service, and academically-related public service
Required Qualifications
An MD, PhD, MD/PhD, or EdD is required.
Assistant Professor- Early level career as a faculty member with appropriate post graduate training
Associate Professor- Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at rank of Assistant Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.
Professor- Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.
Evidence of effective teaching in clinical, small group and large group classroom teaching, and leadership roles in courses.
Evidence of effective teaching, experience in faculty development, and a commitment to work productively with a team of medical educators from clinical and basic science disciplines.
Excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to work collaboratively and independently, problem solve, think critically, and demonstrate flexibility.
Evidence of innovation and scholarship in medical education is also desired.
Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
- Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
- Evidence of ability as a teacher;
- Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
- Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
- Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications
Proven leadership in medical education, scholarly accomplishments, and nationally recognized in their respective field as evidenced by involvement in academic societies at a national level.

This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.
The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.
