Job Summary

Augusta University seeks an experienced academic and administrative leader to serve as the Chair of the Department of Physics and Biophysics within its College of Science and Mathematics. In 2021, the College moved into a new building located on the University's Health Sciences Campus in close proximity to the Medical College of Georgia, the Dental College of Georgia, and the Georgia Cancer Center, which facilitates interdisciplinary research in the biomedical sciences and health care. A School of Public Health is under development. A build-out of the top floor of the Science and Mathematics building, completed in Summer of 2023, provides 28,765 additional square feet for research laboratories and support spaces and is linked by an enclosed bridge to the research laboratories of the Medical College of Georgia. In 2023, the department was separated from Chemistry and newly name as the Department of Physics and Biophyics.

Augusta University seeks a Chair who will apply innovative leadership strategies to program development and to mentoring and supporting students and faculty. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, work closely with the faculty to promote excellence in teaching, research, and service, facilitate faculty efforts at seeking external grant support, strategically manage the allocation of the department's resources and facilities, and represent the Department's interests to the Dean and upper administration. While encouraging and further developing a student-centric environment and innovative teaching methods, the Chair will champion the strengths of the Department in fostering a culture of research and exploring opportunities for new graduate programs. In particular, the AU physics department is committed to growing the Biophysics expertise on-campus. The Chair will work closely with other departments and programs within the College of Science and Mathematics and the broader University community to ensure an atmosphere of collaboration, shared knowledge, and cooperation in both its teaching and research missions.

This is a tenured position at the rank of Professor.

Responsibilities

Teaching - 10%
Teach in discipline

Administrative - 60%
Provide leadership and management of the department with outstanding communication; make teaching assignments and schedules; oversee department budget; ensure program quality; recruit, mentor, develop, manage evaluate and retain high quality and diverse personnel; oversee formation and execution of departmental policies.

Research - 30%
Conduct impactful extramurally funded research in the discipline.



Required Qualifications

Doctoral degree in physics, biophysics, or a closely related field.

Earned tenure at a research university.

A record of professional achievements supporting an appointment at the rank of Professor.

Previous leadership and administrative experience.

Strong record of teaching, research, and external funding. The area of specialization is open.

Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:

  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;

  • Evidence of ability as a teacher;

  • Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;

  • Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,

  • Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

    This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.

    The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.

    Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.

    The Department of Physics and Biophysics offers a BS in Physics which includes a concentration with traditional graduate school preparation, a concentration in nuclear science, and an integrated Master of Arts in Teaching dual degree. Faculty can participate in an interdisciplinary MS program in Biomolecular Science and an MS program in Biological and Computational Mathematics. Opportunities exist for joint appointments with graduate programs housed in the Medical College of Georgia and the Dental College of Georgia and participation in their graduate programs.
