The Communication Department seeks to hire a per-course faculty member to teach Comm 103, Introduction to Human Communication, in the Spring of 2024.

Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 10:40-11:45 am

Course Description

This intensive discussion course utilizes important communication texts as the basis for learning many of the questions and terms that define the discipline of communication. Readings will concentrate in the areas of interpretation, identity, rhetoric and culture to better understand how we construct culture, society and the self through the various forms of communication, and how we analyze those constructions. Emphasis will be on developing the ability to use the readings to build theoretical literacy, to interpret written and visual texts with that theory, and to use the theory to analyze notions of identity.

This course will be taught in person, on campus.


Qualifications:
Candidates should have a graduate degree (PhD or equivalent preferred) in Communication or related field with evidenced teaching experience. The position requires a familiarity with and commitment to the Communication field, student-centered teaching, and a liberal arts education, as well as an appreciation of and respect for the social justice oriented learning/teaching environment St. Mary's fosters as a Lasallian educational institution.

Applicants must reside in California.

Salary: $9,929 - $13,744, dependent on qualifications. The salary range for this position is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021, available here.
