Job Description

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in the Functional Coatings Group in the Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory to conduct advanced research in the development of energy-efficient microelectronics. The successful applicant will spearhead efforts in simulating, optimizing, and benchmarking devices and architectures based on 2-dimensional (2D) semiconductor materials. In particular, the new hire will work as part of a larger team to characterize and develop models of devices based on 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (2D-TMDC) materials such as MoS2 synthesized using novel wafer-scale ALD processes. The postdoctoral appointee will also integrate these devices into complex circuits to benchmark their performance under realistic conditions and will collaborate with computational scientists to apply machine learning techniques to optimize for performance and power consumption. Experience in device modeling and circuit-level analysis is required. Candidates with additional experience in device fabrication and/or machine learning will be favorably considered. The postdoctoral appointee is expected to aid in the modeling and optimization of devices incorporating 2D semiconductor materials, contribute to the design, simulation and evaluation of circuits and architectures integrating these novel devices, as well as present findings to the community through publications and presentations.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. in electrical or computer engineering or materials science with 0 to 2 years of experience, or the equivalent experience through practical application in a laboratory.

  • Knowledge of and experience in device and circuit-scale modeling.

  • Skills working interactively and productively in a multidisciplinary environment.

  • Skills in oral and written communication.

  • Record of publication and external recognition in these areas.

  • Ability to work independently on a day-to-day basis.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience on 2D transition metal dichalcogenide devices or device fabrication.

  • Programming skills, in particular Python. Experience in machine learning.
