Posting Summary
The Research Assistant will support a research team in the management of large environmental datasets, the execution of computational workflows, and manipulation of existing hydraulic models. Specifically, the Assistant will download and organize geospatial data (e.g., LiDAR) for Vermont, and other regions of the United States, for use in existing computational workflows in coding languages such as Python to extract topographic features. Additional duties will involve working within one- and two-dimensional hydraulic modeling programs (i.e., HEC-RAS) to modify inputs and extract outputs, document procedures for metadata and in support of scientific writing. The Assistant will also be expected to actively participate in a team science environment and work collaboratively with researchers from diverse academic disciplines. This work will advance research on improvements to hydraulic modeling and floodplain mapping as well as new methods to characterize river channel and floodplain morphology.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
B.S. in a computational field & one to three years’ experience, or equivalent experience in computational data management with a degree in geosciences, natural resources, or equivalent.
Experience with geospatial analyses, GIS software (e.g., Arcgis or QGIS), and exposure to Python programming.
Experience managing large datasets.
Competence using database management tools, such as Microsoft Excel.
Ability and desire to quickly adapt to changing priorities and learn new computational tools and methods.
Desirable Qualifications
Experience with HEC-RAS or other hydraulic models.
Knowledge of version control systems, such as Git.
Domain knowledge of water resources and geomorphology.
Experience in contributing to an academic research project.
Success working in a team-oriented environment.
Experience in computational workflows.
