At Binghamton, the Information Technology Services (ITS) organization enables teaching, learning, research and the student experience across all University campuses by providing technology support, expertise and solutions via its staff, facilities, applications and services.

The Research Computing Team within ITS focuses on supporting University Researchers. We work in a friendly and collaborative environment with faculty, staff, and students to provide all researchers with the technologies they need, enabling them to focus more on their research.

Under the Director of Innovation and Research, the team supports and builds hardware and software solutions in research environments, acts as a technical resource for faculty and researchers by finding technology solutions for researcher needs, and provides support including installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining technology used for research.

Responsibilities and Duties

As a member of the Research Computing Team, the Systems Administrator will be responsible for:

Operating, maintaining, and upgrading the ITS Research Storage service - run on Linux servers using open-source Ceph and Samba software
Responding and providing support to researchers seeking research storage or general help through the ITS email or request ticketing system (TeamDynamix)
Assisting in the design and creation of future research services, such as providing researchers with virtual machines and virtual windows desktops and enabling confidential research by setting up secure research environments - using a cloud service (Ex: Amazon Web Services) and/or setting up a secure environment on campus
Working with ITS staff and research faculty, to draft and submit relevant grants towards the improvement of the University's research infrastructure

Requirements:
Visa sponsorship is not available for this position

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (or related field)
Demonstrated experience using SSH to access servers
Demonstrated experience installing, configuring, and updating software using a package manager (Ex: npm, snap, apt, yum, dnf)
Demonstrated knowledge creating, moving, copying, and setting permissions for files and directories using the command line (Ex: mkdir, cp, mv, chmod in linux)
Experience with software version control systems (Ex: Git, Github, Gitlab)
Ability to maintain data confidentiality and compliance with regulatory requirements (Ex: HIPAA Data)
Ability to provide excellent customer service, including regular updates and follow-up
Preferred:

Experience with Ceph, an open-source storage software, and Samba, an open-source software being used for file sharing
Experience building, configuring, and supporting Virtual Machines
Prior research or research support experience in a higher-education environment
Experience using compute, storage, networking, and security services in cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Servers, Azure, Google Cloud Platform
