Job Description

Summary

The Center for Comparative Medicine provides for the care, health and well-being of all research animals used in the pursuit of scientific achievement and excellence at Baylor College of Medicine. CCM provides the highest quality veterinary and animal care and acts as a resource for the faculty on veterinary and scientific issues relating to the use of laboratory animals. 

 

Under minimal supervision, the Training Specialist coordinates and performs technical & husbandry skills trainings, assessments, and re-trainings as required. Provides classroom and hands-on training to research and CCM staff as assigned.

Job Duties

  • Communicates professionally via phone or email with research staff and various CCM departments to coordinate trainings.
  • Reads & understands animal study protocols.
  • Coordinates and performs multiple trainings per day.
  • Facilitates surgical training.
  • Maintains proficiency in technical skills.
  • Utilizes previously developed curricula and materials in support of training objectives.
  • Participates in training facilitation via hands on instruction, technical demonstration in the vivarium, audio or video presentations or group discussion.
  • Documents and retains training via physical & electronic records.
  • Assists in evaluating training effectiveness and achievement of learning outcomes.
  • Organizes training materials and environments, including spaces, equipment, handouts, presentations, books, or other visuals.

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree. 
  • Previous research and/or animal care and handling experience.
  • Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
