Summary

Baylor College of Medicine seeks a highly skilled and experienced Senior Systems Engineer to join the Infrastructure and Cloud Services team within the Office of Information Technology. This role encompasses a broad range of responsibilities, such as overseeing cloud and on-premises infrastructure across multiple data centers and offering technical assistance to colleagues and end users. Candidates should possess strong communication skills and proficiency in Microsoft, VMware, Azure, and AWS technologies. While not mandatory, additional skills in automation, DevOps methodologies, and container infrastructure are highly valued and would be beneficial.

The internal title is Senior IT Infrastructure and Systems Associate; the working title is Senior Systems Engineer.

 

This position is eligible to work hybrid within the Greater Houston, TX area.

Job Duties

  • Core Infrastructure Management: Oversee servers deployed across multiple on-premises data centers and cloud environments, including Azure and AWS. Ensure security, performance, and availability of these systems.
  • Virtualization Infrastructure Management: Administer VMware vSphere/vCenter and NSX-T environments and manage Cisco UCS hardware to ensure efficient operation.
  • Windows Server Administration: Deploy and manage Windows Server environments, utilizing skills in Microsoft MCM/SCCM, Group Policy, and DFS (Distributed File System).
  • System Enhancements and Upgrades: Utilize knowledge of technologies such as VMware and Cisco UCS to guide system enhancements and standardizations, ensuring up-to-date security and performance.
  • System Patching: Regularly apply updates and patches to Microsoft Windows servers using tools like SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager).
  • Training and Guidance: Cross-train colleagues on various technologies, including Microsoft KMS licensing, VMware NSX distributed firewalling capabilities, and Azure cloud services.
  • Server Health Monitoring: Monitor server health using tools like SolarWinds, focusing on performance metrics and configuration issues in VMware, Windows, and Linux server environments.
  • Participate in Infrastructure Support and After-Hours On-Call Rotation: Support the infrastructure and be part of the after-hours on-call rotation to address urgent IT issues.
  • Write Standard Operating Procedures and Knowledge Base Articles: Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and knowledge base articles for efficient and consistent IT practices.
  • Work Within an ITIL-Based Process Model: Operate effectively within an ITIL-based framework, handling incidents and changes and fulfilling requests efficiently.
  • Seek Innovative Solutions and Modernize Legacy Systems: Proactively seek out innovative solutions for IT challenges and make recommendations to update and improve legacy systems, infrastructure, and services.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree. Four years of relevant experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • Four years of relevant experience.

Position-specific Requirements

  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows Server management with MCM/SCCM.
  • Knowledge of Group Policy, DFS, KMS licensing, and Microsoft print server management.
  • Skilled in VMware vSphere/vCenter, ESXi, and NSX (DFW).
  • Understanding of core concepts for cloud hyperscalers, including Azure and AWS.

Desirable Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience in infrastructure automation, modern DevOps practices, and infrastructure as code.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
  • Red Hat Satellite.
  • SolarWinds for server health monitoring.
  • ServiceNow experience.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages like JavaScript, Python, PowerShell.
  • Container platforms like Kubernetes and Docker.
