What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Nuclear Engineer with a passion for applying an interdisciplinary mindset to solve complex issues of importance to national and global security. The candidate should have extensive international work experience. The role offers exciting growth and leadership development opportunities as an integral part of successful delivery of our missions for international nuclear safeguards. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Analyze the safety, security, and safeguards implications of facilities related to the nuclear fuel cycle. + Analyze and document proliferation risks for nuclear fuel cycle technologies and activities. + Apply scientific principles to the analysis of a broad range of nuclear nonproliferation issues. + Perform radiation transport studies to model the response of radiation detection systems, evaluate nuclear reactor operating parameters, and identify and resolve signals indicative of nuclear and radiological materials. + Write technical reports documenting research and development (R&D) efforts. + Conceive of and contribute to R&D proposals for new research projects related to nuclear safety, security, and safeguards. + Lead and collaborate on projects in the full range of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). + Plan, develop, and deliver technical training to researchers, industry, and government officials. + Characterize nuclear and radiological material inventories throughout established and emerging nuclear fuel cycles. + Develop, document, and validate approaches for consequence and risk analysis. + Collaborate with experts across engineering and policy doctrines. + Effectively communicate research, development and technical concepts to stakeholders with a variety of backgrounds. + Ability to travel and present research and development activities to various stakeholders and peer communities. The selected applicant can be a remote worker located in any U.S. State or District of Columbia. Regular or periodic travel to your assigned work location may be required. Qualifications We Require: + Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Physics or related STEM, plus four (4) or more years of directly related experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job. Or Bachelor’s degree as stated above, plus eight (8) or more years of experience. + Minimum of five (5) years working experience at the International Atomic Energy Agency. + Experience in the following: + Produce technical reports. + Performing proliferation risk assessments and material thruput analysis for nuclear reactors and other fuel cycle facilities. + Working in the international nuclear safeguards regime including, the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the Additional Protocol. + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level Security Clearance. Qualifications We Desire: + Experience in: + Analyzing elements of the nuclear fuel cycle for safety, security, or safeguards (3S) concerns. + U.S. domestic and international concepts and approaches to the control of, and accounting for, nuclear materials. + Characterization of nuclear and radiological material across nuclear fuel cycles. + Perform radiation transport modeling. + Broad familiarity with nuclear engineering + Active DOE Q-level or DOD equivalent Security Clearance. About Our Team: The mission of the International Safeguards and Engagements Department (6832) is to provide technical solutions to the international safeguards regime and support the development of safeguards and export control competencies in partner countries. Through our US government sponsors we research technologies, build capabilities, and provide analyses to support the international nuclear nonproliferation monitoring regime's mission of ensuring that nuclear activities are used for peaceful purposes. Our work supports the export control regime through commodity identification training. We engage with international partners through the Visiting Research Scholar Program and the Cooperative Monitoring Center. Position Information: This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years. Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
