What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a Systems Engineer with a mechanical or electrical background to perform a dual role of Weapon System Engineer (WSE) and core team member on the Development Hardware Team (DHT). The WSE/DHT member will interface with Product Realization Teams (PRTs), System Design Leads, internal/external vendors, and other nuclear weapon production agencies. The WSE is a key interface between PRTs and the Systems team. The WSE advocates for both their assigned component(s) and the warhead system. The WSE ensures the scope and requirements for their component(s) are defined and validated with stakeholders, the design and integration activities are managed within cost and schedule, and the product(s) as-built meets requirements. In the Weapon System Engineer role you may be called on to: + Serve as an interface between Sandia W80-4 Systems and Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC) W80-4 Systems + Collaborate with other Sandia and KCNSC WSEs to work design to production transition problems + Understand component technical design, design trades and strategies for development and qualification + Understand the risks and handling plans associated with those risks + Participate in and contribute to joint SNL/KCNSC programmatic and technical activities such as producibility, Monthly Program Reviews, cross-site program guidance, tester readiness strategies, and anomaly resolution + Provide SNL Systems updates and support to KCNSC Systems and solicit aid as required + Review component test and qualification plans. Consult with quality to understand potential pitfalls and assist PRT in root cause analysis when failures occur and the development of resolution plans + Understand hardware needs and delivery schedule. When deliverables are late, understand estimates for expected completion/delivery and work across sites for recovery The DHT is a subset of this department that focuses on reducing risks to delivering development hardware. The W80-4 program is on an aggressive schedule. Innovative opportunities to reduce schedule risk are being pursued to fast-track engineering learning cycles by reducing development build time (think rapid prototyping). In the Development Hardware Team role you may be called on to: + Assist PRTs to accelerate hardware (PRT use and System use) availability through hardware fabrication and procurement support, and interfacing with Rapid Prototyping capabilities + Work with the Hardware Mgmt. Team, Hardware Planning Team, and Hardware Assembly Team to understand risks or issues with hardware deliveries, and mitigate those risks + Interface between hardware Assembly Teams and PRTs for improper hardware deliveries + Serve as the primary interface between the DHT and the PRT to negotiate and define requirements for product definition, schedule, quantity, quality and inspection, and security + Review product definition for completeness and understanding prior to fabrication + Collaborate with W80-4 and W87-1 PRTs and Weapon System Engineers to identify and resolve component development hardware issues: + Manufacturing methods and approaches + Material selections + COTS alternatives + Design modification to improve manufacturability + Hardware procurement delays + Non-conforming hardware + Understand component technical design and design trades and strategies for development hardware acquisition + Interface with Sandia’s procurement process + Collaborate with internal and external vendors to ensure hardware is on schedule and resolve schedule delays/issues + Be knowledgeable of Sandia’s configuration management systems such as PDMLink and PRIME + Communicate design and build status and issues and solicit help needed as required Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Qualifications We Require: + Bachelor's degree in relevant field plus 2 or more years' related experience; or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related discipline + Academic or job experiences in areas such as: engineering design, testing, production, or related modeling/simulation projects + Ability and willingness to travel up to 25% of the time + Active U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, or equivalent DOD Top Secret level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Experience and success working with KCNSC in development and pre-production activities + Possess strong leadership skills, a solid technical foundation, and a demonstrated ability to work closely with program and line organizations within the nuclear weapons community at Sandia, NNSA, DoD, and across the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) as a whole + Possess strong knowledge/experience/background in either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering + 2 years of leadership experience + 2 years CAD or CREO 4.0 experience + Knowledge of GD&T, ASME Y14.5-2009 preferred + Experience interpreting and redlining technical drawings + Knowledge of manufacturing processes, including machining, welding, coatings/plating’s, and additive manufacturing + Knowledge of metallurgy and material properties + Experience and success working with internal and external vendors in development and pre-production activities + Experience in nuclear weapon product realization processes + Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced high-pressure environment + Experience in technical program/project management functions, including defining program work scope, schedules, budgets, priorities, and performance milestones; developing cost, scope, and schedule baselines; and managing change control and risk + Experience and demonstrated high performance in one or more ND technical mission areas + Strong customer focus and desire to build teams of people to capitalize on opportunities to improve the operations of the ND program at Sandia + Demonstrated ability and experience in working with all levels of staff and management at Sandia and customer organizations + Demonstrated success in working with multi-disciplinary teams spanning different locations + Excellent oral and written communication skills About Our Team: The W80-4 Life Extension Program (LEP) is intended to strengthen our nation’s strategic deterrence, by modernizing the W80 warhead and integrating it with the Long-Range Standoff (LRSO) missile. The program’s scope includes design and qualification of the warhead and integration of non-nuclear and nuclear components within the warhead. Additionally, we are responsible for developing the Joint Test Assembly for surveillance along with trainer hardware, handling gear, and other ancillary equipment. It is the first modernization program to be conducted in parallel with a missile development program. The W80-4 Systems Component Product Realization department (08244) is supporting Systems Engineering functions for the W80-4. The department partners with other W80-4 Systems departments to coordinate component design, development, qualification, and pre-production activities and establish Sandia/KCNSC interface processes/infrastructure.
