What Your Job Will Be Like: Who We Are The mission is why you come; the people are why you stay! At Sandia National Laboratories, the magnitude of our mission is immense. Working in Telemetry, your contributions will directly impact national security by ensuring the reliability of America’s nuclear stockpile. We have an amazing interdisciplinary team ready to attack the next big engineering challenge thrown our way and are always on the lookout for the next great creative-tinkerer or innovative-designer that we can help grow into specialists and leaders within the inclusive, family-like culture we’ve built. With a wide-array of on-going projects and new projects on the horizon, opportunity abounds to hone your current skills and grow new skills; and because our telemetry units interact with all aspects of nuclear weapon systems, you get to learn and see the big picture down to the smallest components across the weapon lifecycle. If you believe you’re up for the challenge and can excel in our team-focused, mission-critical Telemetry projects, we’d love to meet you! What We Do Our telemetry systems staff design, develop, and qualify weapon system instrumentation (or telemetry systems) for use in Joint Test Assembly (JTA) surveillance flight tests, system-level ground tests, and researched-based experimental flight tests for all U.S. nuclear deterrent systems. Telemetry systems interface with the weapon systems to collect and transmit performance data, state of health data, and custom sensor data in combined environment tests. As a cornerstone of the Stockpile Evaluation Program, our JTA efforts allow critical assessment of weapon systems hardware and processes and Department of Defense (DoD) weapon delivery platforms. What We Need As an entry-level mechanical engineer, you will be on a team responsible for the design, test, and verification of the mechanical aspects of the telemetry design, as well as support fixture development, procedural documentation, and fabrication efforts. Telemetry units are highly integrated electro-mechanical designs that must function through severe environments on DoD missiles and aircraft. The ability to work with a cross-functional engineering team and a wide array of stakeholders is essential to success. A successful candidate would have skills and experience with the following: + Strong design skills in CAD (CREO preferred) + Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing knowledge + Experience designing for multiple manufacturing processes including machined aluminum and 3D printing + Mechanical Testing and Data Analysis + Demonstrated strong documentation related to product development within a quality management system + Strong desire to learn On any given day, you may: + Team with stakeholders to understand and document system needs and requirements for Telemetry HW. + Use critical thinking to troubleshoot both mechanical and electromechanical issues with the product and help provide solutions. + Perform hands-on work with Telemetry product through fabrication and test activities. + Use CREO to design and model Telemetry product. + Perform and analyze FEA and thermal simulations. + Create test plans, test, and document to characterize mechanical performance of designed HW. + Analyze test data and contribute to test reports and reviews. + Work with vendors and Sandia buyers to procure development product. + Work with MCAD and the product definition team to create and authorize product drawings. + Investigate and resolve production issues on new and existing product with production agencies and vendors. Applicants on this requisition may be interviewed by multiple organizations at Sandia National Laboratories. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Qualifications We Require: + Bachelor’s Degree in relevant engineering discipline + Ability to travel for business up to 25% time + Ability to receive DOE Top Secret ‘Q’ Security Clearance + Demonstrated experience with a software design tool(s) + Ability to work on-site at the Livermore, CA facility up to 100% of time Qualifications We Desire: + Demonstrated breadth of knowledge in Mechanical Engineering and other engineering disciplines through school projects or work experience + Demonstrated experience working with and across a broad range of stakeholders, especially in a government setting + Active DOE Top Secret ‘Q’ Security Clearance or other transferable U.S. Government Clearance + Understanding of Nuclear Weapons and Joint Test Assembly design principles About Our Team: Sandia California's Telemetry and Stockpile Support Department develops and maintains telemetry systems in support of the nuclear deterrence surveillance mission. Telemetry systems has responsibility for all aspects of telemetry development, including conceptual design, prototype development and testing, and transitioning production work to DOE production agencies. Telemetry systems integrate precision sensor electronics and signal conditioning with RF communication systems to support flight testing of Joint Test Assemblies. Work is performed by teams of electrical engineers and mechanical engineers, in partnership with quality engineering, reliability engineering, and project management. Current development mission assignments include the W88 ALT370 JTA8 project, the W78 JTA6R project, and the W76 JTA3 project. Stockpile support oversees the quality, reliability, and availability of all qualified telemetry systems that are being used in the on-going surveillance mission.
