Job Summary

Collaborates with Nurse Leadership team and other Interdisciplinary team members to assess and identify the required and desirable content for professional nurse unit-based orientation as well as ongoing educational opportunities. The nurse educator has varied responsibilities in addition to teaching and training that include ongoing evaluation of employee learning and training needs either recommended or observed by management as an area of deficiency warranting additional training. Role of the Nurse Educator also entails responsibilities that include: evaluating, suggesting, creating, and incorporating clinical programs to improve medical practices for all clients (patients).

Responsibilities

The duties include, but are not limited to:

Assessment:
  • Assesses nursing systems and practices across the hospital campus; analyzes, develops and implements audits to monitor for educational opportunities.
  • Utilizes systemic data collection, aggregation, analysis and reporting techniques to identify educational opportunities.
  • Educates all professional and direct care staff in the proper use of equipment, supplies and instruments; continuously coordinates in-service education and workshops for all applicable staff.
  • Corrective Action Plan (CAP) and monitoring of areas of improvement; in service as needed. (MERS-flow sheeting documentation, vital signs, and documentation in the electronic medical record, closing open notes, SBAR communication with medical staff)
  • Reeducation of high protocol training concerns related to nursing, client care and staffing that may not be included in HRD training.
  • Ongoing evaluation and review of past in-services and the evaluation of employee needs that warrant re-inservicing; continuing opportunities for employees to learn through program development specific to their area of need or deficiency.
  • Maintains continued review of in-services done in the past three years and ensures the information is updated and made available to staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Planning:
  • Assists in developing organizational wide corrective action plans related to nursing services and other health care supports provided when deficiencies in quality of care have been determined.
  • Provides Binax and ID Abbott training for nursing employees.
  • Assists Infection Control Nurse when support is needed; performing Binax or ID Abbott testing for staff and individuals.

Competency and skill fair event planning:
  • Bi-Annual competency fair event planning and development for all nurses, HST's, CNA's and other specialty areas as requested by nursing management for Gracewood employees.
  • Establishes and maintains a Nursing Education Plan and calendar which includes new hire support and development, preceptor/mentor development, assessment of needs, continuing education needs, coordination and oversight of unit-based orientation, and competency assessment evaluation.
  • Designs, coordinates, and teaches the content for unit-based nursing orientation for RNs, LPNs, and direct care staff. Provides direct instruction and collaborates with nursing and hospital leadership in providing these services in both the clinical and classroom setting.
  • Drafts and establishes curriculums to fulfill the education requirements for fellow medical personnel annual classes and programs as identified and needed.
  • Conduct, manage, and plan code blue drills monthly for the Gracewood campus employees in both Redbud and Camilla. Management of the process will include the completion of the code blue report and participating in the administrative discussion of the review of the drill.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive partnership with schools of nursing and other clinical programs.
  • Maintains Mental Health First Aide (MHFA) Instructor Certification and provides MHFA certification courses for ECRH staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Evaluation:
  • Assures that educational content is current, evidence-based and meets professional standards at the state and national level.
  • In the event of a death of an individual, the nurse educator will complete and present Nursing Staff Death Review to the Mortality Review Committee when designated by DON/ADON. The Nurse Educator will also follow-up on all required corrective measures as noted during the review of mortality.
  • Assists with oversite, coordination, and facilitation of the ECRH/AU Nurse Residency, Nurse Fellowship and Nurse Mentorship Programs along with the Nurse Educator on the Augusta Campus.
  • Continually assesses team member competencies and job specific level of knowledge. Works collaboratively with nursing and hospital leadership to assure that professional and direct care staff maintain all required competencies. Advises and assists in developing suitable methods to evaluate competencies of staff; designs training programs as indicated.
  • Serves on Medication Variance committee to improve outcomes, make recommendations for improvement and look for educational opportunities as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Documentation:
  • Demonstrates the ability to accurately complete and review all documentation as relates to the provision of care of the individuals or in daily operations and to instruct others in its proper completion
  • Participates in the development of appropriate documentation and clinical standards in accordance with performance indicator as requested
  • Prepares summaries of identified educational opportunities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Communication:
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team on problem identification and education opportunities
  • Develops and implements educational information, materials and programs.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert (SME) to the staff members of the hospital and acts as a liaison between the various departments, improvement teams and staff members of the hospital to achieve positive outcomes
  • Serves as a resource person to DON/ADON for matters related to educational needs.
  • Maintains effective communication with all IDT members.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university and a minimum of three years of experience.

Valid Registered Nursing License to practice in the state of Georgia.

Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS/BCLS certification.

Certifications/License

Valid Registered Nursing License to practice in the state of Georgia.

Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS/BCLS certification.

Pay Grade: 19

Salary: $84,353/Annually

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
