Job Summary

The Communications and Media Relations Strategist will assist in the planning, coordination, implementation, and execution of internal and external communications and media relations for the Division of External Relations. This position is responsible for supporting the development and execution of comprehensive communication strategies, content creation for news announcements, articles, web, digital media, social media, and various divisional needs, maintaining and building positive media relations, and enhancing the overall visibility and reputation of the division. Reporting to the Marketing Liaison for the Division of External Relations (Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement, Government Relations, Volunteer Services & Community Engagement, Protocol & Special Events, and Communications & Marketing).

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Communications: Supports the planning, coordination, creation, implementation, and execution of internal and external communications, including news announcements, press releases, feature articles, web content, emails, social media, digital media, and various divisional needs.



Content creation: Develops and curates compelling and strategic content for various platforms that highlights divisional achievements, enhances the institution's brand, and engages both internal and external audiences.



Media Relations: Cultivates and maintains positive relationships with media outlets on the local, state, regional, and national levels, works in conjunction with C&M for media inquiries and interviews relevant to divisional objectives and initiatives, secures media coverage for divisional events, achievements, and high-level initiatives. Secures positive media coverage for the division.

Strategy: Supports the Marketing Liaison in the creation and implementation of comprehensive communication strategies that align with divisional and institutional goals and objectives.

Special Projects communications: Supports the Marketing Liaison in various divisional needs as it pertains to special projects for the division and institution.

Collaboration and assessment: Works closely with other departments within External Relations to determine departmental communications needs, ensuring consistent messaging and branding throughout the division. Supports in providing strategic communication and best-practice guidance to departments.



Digital and Social Media: Ensures engaging content development and strategies for our division, in collaboration with C&M, that enhances our division's online presence.



Media Monitoring: Monitors media coverage and industry trends, assesses the effectiveness of current communication strategies, and provides reports on media metrics and outcomes.

Other Duties: Perform all other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field, with a minimum of three years' experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree preferred; Minimum 10 years of experience in strategic communications, media relations, or a related field in higher-education communications. Proven success in developing and implemented communications strategies. Able to work across platforms seamlessly and create narratives for web, print, social, video, e-comms, and digital. Strong media relations experience with a proven record of securing positive media coverage. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Ability to navigate and respond to complex and sensitive issues in a professional, timely manner. Able to handle high pressure situations.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Must be a problem solver who works quickly, a team-player willing to support staff on both small and large projects, good judgement to handle sensitive information and high priority tasks and can think critically to develop creative solutions on new challenges. Demonstrated ability to work across cross-functional teams with time sensitive deadlines and discretion is critical. Must be proficient in writing, storytelling, media relations, and content strategy. Ability to maintain confidentiality Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases. Detail-oriented with strong organizational, prioritization and multi-tasking skills.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (work outside of the normal business hours will likely be required of an employee in an exempt level position)

Pay Grade: 19

Salary Minimum: $51,967 - $65,000

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position

Conditions of Employment
