Bidder Eligibility:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

Level promotions (Member to Senior) may be permitted, but are not guaranteed, on this requisition.

Employees must remain in their current position for one year before applying for a new position, with the exception of student interns. Application of this requirement will not supersede collective bargaining agreements. What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Corporate Storage Team is seeking a Hazardous Materials Packaging Specialist.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Provide guidance for hazardous material, nuclear, and radiological materials management, shipping, storage, handling, and transportation.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Transportation (DOT), Department of Defense, and Sandia National Laboratories requirements for on- and off-site hazardous materials, nuclear, and radiological material transportation activities.
  • Develop and maintain work instructions, and training materials for hazardous materials packaging operations.
  • Develop and improve planning, implementation, and management of nuclear, and radiological storage strategies.
  • Team with Material Control & Accountability (MC&A), Radiation Protection, Criticality Safety, and other key stakeholders to ensure safe and compliant operations.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience (8 years exempt level relevant experience in lieu of degree).
  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Ability to interpret federal, state, and local hazardous material standards and regulations.
  • Experience in hazrdous material management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage, quality control, or transportation.
  • Knowledge of safety basis processes and implementation in hazardous material management.
  • Knowledge of resource planning, optimization practices, and resource integration processes.
  • Knowledge of inventory and supply chain management.
  • Experience solving problems associated with the management of hazardous materials.
  • In-depth knowledge of nuclear, or radiological material compatibility requirements.
  • Working knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices related to export and import controls.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through to completion on multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and classified matter.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to model behaviors that reflect Sandia's core values.
  • Extensive knowledge focused on nuclear/radioactive materials and their by-products.
  • Regulatory requirements for storage and transportation of radioactive materials to include criticality safety.
  • Familiar with SNL processes for storing and transporting accountable nuclear materials.
  • Proficient with computer programs used to track accountable nuclear materials at SNL—Oracle, RITS (Access), and Excel (CSI Rollups).
  • Working knowledge of DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations, International Air Traffic Association, Nuclear Federal Codes (10CFR), Office of Transportation Safeguards Operations, DOE/SNL explosive safety programs and requirements.
  • Experience/knowledge of nuclear/radioactive material, weapon assemblies, subassemblies, and components handling/testing, transportation and storage is highly desired.
  • Knowledge of MC&A operations.
  • Understanding of DOE STD 1027.
  • Able to communicate at a high level to brief various DOE, SFO, and SNL stakeholders

Corporate Storage supports Sandia line customers and programs with supply chain management by ensuring corporate assets are in the right place at the right time. Corporate Storage provides material management and storage space for classified and unclassified, nuclear, radioactive and explosive material.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance.
