Summary

Responsible for supporting the histology department with clerical and ancillary duties.  Completes case assembly to include quality control processes and distribution to pathologists.  Maintains maintenance logs and keeps laboratory equipment operational and manages archiving of patient materials.  Is able to perform duties of a histotech under supervision.

Job Duties

  • Case assembly and distribution
  • Assembles cases and follows established quality control processes to verify patient demographics and perform a one-to-one slide to block verification.  
  • Distributes cases to on-site and off-site pathologists. 
  • Maintains laboratory equipment
  • Follows established guidelines on rotating and changing consumable items on laboratory equipment.  This includes, but is not limited to, tissue processors, tissue embedding units, tissue stainers, and tissue coverslippers.  
  • Documents all maintenance on laboratory equipment maintenance logs. 
  • Archiving of patient materials
  • Files patient materials to include, but not limited to, tissue blocks, slides, requisitions and orders.  
  • Retrieves patient materials for ancillary studies. 
  • Perform duties of a histotech
  • Upon successful training establishing competency, is able to embed tissue, cut tissue, and stain tissue, with necessary credentials.  
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of relevant experience.
