What Your Job Will Be Like:

Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a Patent Attorney for its Intellectual Property Law Center at its Albuquerque location. This is an in-person position, and the selected candidate must live in Albuquerque or the surrounding area. The attorney will draft and prosecute patent applications, manage a patent docket, and provide legal advice and assistance in all matters involving or relating to intellectual property issues, policies, and procedures. The position offers the opportunity to branch out beyond solely performing patent drafting and prosecution work. Our attorneys counsel on technology transfer activities ranging from non-disclosure agreements, cooperative research and development agreements, user facilities agreements, license agreements and negotiations as well as software licensing, copyright, litigation, and trademark registration.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Prepare and prosecute Sandia patent applications.
  • Manage a patent docket.
  • Provide legal advice and assistance in all matters involving or relating to intellectual property issues, policies, and procedures.
  • Counsel on technology transfer activities ranging from non-disclosure agreements, cooperative research and development agreements, user facilities.
  • Prepare and negotiate patent and software licenses in conjunction with our technology transfer organization.
  • Counsel on litigation matters.
  • Routinely advise management and staff while engaging at all levels of the company.
  • Interact with corporate counsel, DOE/NNSA counsel, and outside counsel.
  • Advise management on complex projects and intellectual property legal matters to anticipate, identify, and protect the corporation against legal liability.

Onsite workDue to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A U.S. law degree from an ABA accredited law school, admission to practice in at least one U.S. state and current registration with the USPTO is required.
  • Excellent academic qualifications with at least four (4) years of law firm and/or in-house experience in patent drafting/prosecution and technology transfer transactional work and master’s degree or PhD in electrical engineering, computer science/engineering, physics, systems engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, component engineering areas or a relevant science or engineering discipline OR at least seven (7) years of law firm and/or in-house experience in patent drafting/prosecution and technology transactional work and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science/engineering, physics, systems engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, component engineering areas or a relevant science or engineering discipline.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal and communication skills are needed.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Proven track record of success in the patent field.
