Job Description Summary:

With supervision, will perform general administrative duties and/or research functions for the purpose of developing a working knowledge of a specific area of study. Internship for Spring-Summer, 2024, up to 6 months.

Description of Duties and Tasks

  • General Job Description: A division of the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB), TxGIO (formerly known as TNRIS) is the clearing house for a variety of GIS data in Texas. The intern will play a key role in TxGIO with responsibility for special projects, the primary focus of which being on data acquisition, 
     evelopment and distribution. Other assignments may be added to provide the intern with greater exposure to the important work performed by TxGIO teams.

Additional Job Specific Duties

  • GIS Intern will assist in projects to enhance the ability of TxGIO to serve data to the public.

  • Work is primarily focused within the Strategic Mapping program (StratMap).

  • Projects primarily include digitization, cataloguing, and data management of the TxGIO Historic Imagery Archive, development of derivative data products, participating in georeferencing and QAQC of the TxGIO eoreferencing pilot project.

  • Additional work may include QAQC and supportive work of various StratMap projects including Orthoimagery, Lidar, Land Cover, Land Parcel & Address Point and Digital Twin data.

  • Interns may also periodically assist other teams in TxGIO( Design, Innovation and Marketing or Geographic Infrastructure and Technology) with GIS related work on an as needed basis.

Work Hours

6 months Part-time, 15-19hours/week (spring semester), up to 30 hours (summer semester), 250 hours total minimum per semester

Remote work option

Remote work may be possible on an as needed basis but is not guaranteed. Additionally, remote work will be contingent upon multiple factors such as: current project needs, project deadlines, supervisor approval and the demonstrated ability by the intern to successfully accomplish project tasks from a remote environment. All interns will be required to work in the TxGIO office for the first month of their internship.

Preferred Knowledge

  • Knowledge of aerial imagery, Lidar, land parcels, address points, and familiarity with the geography of Texas.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working with ESRI’s ArcGIS software and related products

Special Requirements

  • Applicants should either be enrolled at a recognized Texas college or university, or a recent graduate. Successful candidates will have a strong foundational understanding of GIS concepts and familiarity with ArcGIS Pro and the ESRI suite.

  • Completion of an introductory GIS course is required. Current enrollment or completion of a geospatial analysis course preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Work is routinely performed in an office environment.

  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, pushing and pulling.

  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 10 pounds.

Pay Rate

$22.00/Hour

Plus optional three (3) semester hours credit through university (to be arranged by the student)
