Job Function:

Install, test, troubleshoot, maintain and repair all of the department's major chemical instrumentation and related peripherals as well as small chemical equipment used in classroom labs and research laboratories; assist and train students and faculty to use all the department's equipment.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in electronic technology, chemistry, or related field by date of appointment from an accredited institution.

Preferred Education:

Master's degree.

Minimum Experience:

At least one year of chemical instrumentation repair, testing, installation, maintenance or related experience.

Preferred Experience:

At least three years of experience with chemical instrumentation; experience using and teaching how to use testing equipment; experience with computer software installation and testing; Biomed Technician Certification.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose, repair, troubleshoot and maintain all of the department’s analytical instrumentation and small equipment which is used in laboratories, for training and for research; may include immediate troubleshooting and assistance when instruments malfunction during classroom labs or research experiments.
  • Install and test all instrumentation equipment that comes into the department's rooms and laboratories.
  • Instruct and demonstrate the use of laboratory instrumentation and associated software to students and faculty.
  • Effectively communicate and work constructively with faculty, students, staff, suppliers, vendors and external support engineers, as well as other departments.
  • Research products, parts, suppliers and supplies for the highest quality and the best price in order to conserve department resources.
  • Maintain an inventory of laboratory instrumentation, equipment, associated computers, printers, purchase requests, suppliers and orders in process for quick access to status information.
  • Work proactively regarding repairs and routine maintenance required to keep instruments in optimal operating condition; Upgrade current equipment as technology, computer-controlled instruments, operating systems and software evolve.
  • Serve as a resource person for students, faculty and staff in proper use of laboratory equipment, computers and software as well as to solve technical problems as they occur.
  • Prepare reports and quotes for equipment committee and department chair.
  • Orient, train and supervise students for the electronic shop.
  • Develop on-going proposals to reduce resource use and operating costs.
  • Work independently, prioritizing repair and maintenance tasks as needed; Document maintenance history of departmental equipment, including complementary photos where applicable.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
