Job Posting Title:

Telescope Operator (Hourly)

Job Description Summary:

ACC Astronomy department is looking for a Telescope Operator to help support Astronomical observations using our 11 inch telescopes located at the Round Rock Campus. Successful applicants are expected to host up to 2 observing sessions per month, each 3 to 4 hours long.

Job Description:

Description of Duties and Tasks:

  • schedule required observing sessions in coordination with astronomy instructors
  • setting up and operating 11-inch telescopes during evening sessions
  • supports students to carry out lab-related activities
  • maintains an inventory of equipment and supplies
  • monitors weather conditions and safety for participating students


  • basic astronomical knowledge
  • basic knowledge of telescopes and their operations (alignment & tracking)


  • previous experience with astronomical telescopes preferred
  • experience in photography preferred
  • basic computer skills

Required Education:

  • high school diploma or educational equivalent
  • at least one astronomy class (either high school or college level)

Physical Requirements:

  • lifting heavy equipment (more than 50 lbs), moving, and setting up and disassembling equipment


  • Work safely and follow safety rules. Report unsafe working conditions and behavior. Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.
