We are seeking a driven and results-oriented Quality Engineer to be part of an existing team of qualityengineers. The Transportation Systems Analysis Group researches, designs, develops, tests, and buildsstate-of-the-art secure transportation solutions. Our quality services are also being sought to support otherareas, such as corporate and technical program and project management systems. As a quality engineer inthis group, you will apply systematic approaches to improve, maintain, and develop quality systems andprocesses.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Apply technical judgment in determining optimal application of engineering and technical practices to ensure the delivery of high-quality product.
  • Apply engineering methods, tools and techniques to design, maintain, and improve product and processes.
  • Develop and operate quality control systems, understand the application and analysis of testing and inspection procedures, use metrology and statistical methods to diagnose, and correct improper quality control practices.
  • Interpret technical drawings, product specifications and requirements in relation to product and process characteristics throughout the life cycle.
  • Define, select, and apply various techniques including supplier qualification, certification, evaluation, ratings, performance improvement, etc.
  • Identify sources of design inputs such as customer requirements, regulatory requirements and how they translate into manufacturing.
  • Identify and apply various evaluations and tests to verify and validate the design of products and processes.
  • Define, identify, and apply product and process control methods such as developing control plans, identifying critical control points, developing and validating work instructions, inspection equipment and instructions.
  • Lead quality assurance, causal analysis, assessments, corrective action and preventive action analysis, and measurement related activities based on a defect prevention methodology implemented through Plan-Do-Check-Act.
  • Define, describe, and interpret the basic elements of a quality system, including design, planning, control, and improvement, documentation, quality standards from product and process design through quality cost systems, audit programs, etc.
  • Support surveillance activities.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$95,400 - $185,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, plus five (5) years related experience; Or a Master’s degree in a relevant field, plus one (1) years related experience; or equivalent experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job.
  • Experienced in the following:
  • NQA-1 or other industry standard quality programs
  • Developing and/or improving quality systems and processes.
  • Interpreting technical drawings, product specifications, and requirements in relation to design.
  • Product characteristics throughout the life cycle.
  • Conducting quality inspections, observations, and reviews for technical projects.
  • Leading diverse and technical teams.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Knowledge in:
  • Regulatory requirements (DOE O 414.1, NQA-1, NAP 401.1, etc.).
  • Industry standards (ISO9001, AS9100, etc.).
  • Sandia’s non-nuclear weapon mission spaces.
  • Excellent verbal communication and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to integrate with team and leadership and interact effectively with all levels of internal and external partners to build effective working relations to reach consensus.
  • Demonstrated success in cross-functional teams to facilitate and drive integrated, multidisciplinary solutions to complex operational problems.

About Our Team:

The Transportation Surety and Design Department supports the NNSA Office of Secure Transportation (OST) by conducting safety and security evaluations of OST operations, designing transportation systems and, when warranted, identifying and demonstrating technology applications to enhance OST safety and/or security posture. The Protective Force Component Testing and Development Team is also a vital part of the department. This team evaluates, develops, and improves a wide variety of technologies for enhancing protective force effectiveness for the DOE, DoD, and several other customers and applications.

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
