Job Description

Position Details:

The accountant plays a pivotal role within the Business Office of Mayville State University, contributing to the financial health and integrity of the institution. Reporting to the Controller, the accountant is responsible for ensuring accurate financial record-keeping, compliance with regulatory standards, and providing critical financial insights to support strategic decision-making across Mayville State University.

Reconciliation and Financial Reporting

· Monitor sponsored agreement financial activity and work with department personnel to assure compliance.

· Create ad hoc reports for department personnel.

· Post/review financial statement account activity on a daily/monthly basis.

· Prepare reconciliation/adjusting entries on a monthly, quarterly, annual basis as necessary.

· Prepare all sponsored agreement quarterly and final financial reports.


Specialized Accounting Activities

· Perform a wide variety of specialized accounting activities including monthly bank reconciliations, journal entries to maintain the general ledger, federal grant indirect cost proposals, and maintaining a system of internal accounting controls.

· Unclaimed property preparation and filing as well as sales tax preparation and reconciliation.


Provide Direction and Assistance to Grant Related Staff

· Train and assist pertinent staff in post-award compliance and procedures.

· Create ad hoc reports for department personnel.

· Assist faculty and staff with post award responsibilities including connecting awardees with grants accounting personnel who will set-up new grant awards, monitor expenditures, and provide financial reports to the granting agency.

Required Competencies:

Demonstrated ability to develop, interpret, implement, and articulate complete institutional policies
Ability to prepare high-level quantitative and qualitative analyses of data
Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively
Proven experience in accounting or financial related activities, preferably within higher education
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
Preferred qualifications:

CPA or Master’s degree in a related field
