Job Summary
The Department Chair of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery for the Dental College of Georgia (DCG) at Augusta University reports directly to the Dean of the DCG and provides leadership and guidance in teaching, research, and service for the Pre-Doctoral Dental medicine (DMD) program and the Advanced Education program in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS). The Department Chair is responsible for departmental faculty including professional development, scheduling, and productivity by ongoing mentorship, monitoring, and assessment. This position is responsible for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the pre-doctoral (DMD) OMFS curriculum to ensure compliance with the DCGs mission, the CODA accreditation standards, by regular monitoring of DMD student academic achievement and progress. The Department Chair also provides administrative leadership for the OMFS Advanced Education program, including resident admissions decisions, resident development, progression, professional conduct, assessing residency productivity and program compliance and accreditation standards and DCG patient care compliance protocols. The Department Chair also provides oversight for the management of the Augusta University Surgery Center. This is a full-time administrative faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The tenure status for this position is commensurate with qualifications.
Responsibilities
Teaching - 40%
' Participates in and facilitates the overall department teaching mission.
' Provides leadership and guidance for OMFS pre-doctoral and advanced education programs to ensure they meet CODA accreditation standards.
' Ensures appropriate support and development of OMFS faculty teaching.
' Supports the DCG academic mission.
' Maintains productive educational collaborations with all department chairs and DCG advanced education program directors.
Administration - 20%
' Provides leadership and guidance for the department in the areas of research, teaching, patient care, and service to support the DCG mission.
' Provides administrative guidance and oversight for department academic responsibilities, faculty development, staff management, budgetary matters and enforcement of DCG & AU policies.
' Provides administrative oversight for the AU Surgery Center.
Scholarship - 10%
' Preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and of scholarly presentations at professional meetings.
' Monitors OMFS faculty scholarly achievement to meet annual goals.
' Supports the DCG and AU research mission and seeks funding opportunities by collaboration with the DCG Associate Dean for Research.
' Ensures department compliance with AU research policies.
Service - 10%
' Participate in public, professional, and institutional service as a leader or contributing member of appropriate committees, boards, and councils.
' Ensure department faculty participation in service activities.
' Demonstrate compliance with AU and DCG policies including annual HR compliance training (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA, Title IX, etc.)
Clinical/Patient - 20%
' Provides quality patient care as part of the AU Dental Associates group, and provides appropriate surgical services in the AU Surgery Center and AU Health hospital and clinics.
' Provides quality patient care in appropriate extramural settings for which the DCG has contracts and MOU's (e.g., Georgia Department of Corrections)
' Ensures appropriate staffing levels for patient care and support for clinical staff as part of the DCG clinical care mission.
' Ensures the department meets established patient care compliance goals
Required Qualifications
DDS or DMD or foreign equivalent.
Completion of a CODA-accredited advanced dental education program in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, board certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and eligibility for licensure by the Georgia Board of Dentistry.
Associate Professor - Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Assistant Professor with background, education, and training consistent with the following position requirements.
Professor - Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor with background, education, and training consistent with the following position requirements.
Experience equivalent to five years in dental education that includes strategic planning, academic assessment, teaching, research/scholarship, and college/institutional committee service.
Demonstrated experience in assessment, data analysis, and educational outcomes, as it relates to curriculum, learning objectives and accreditation requirements.
Demonstrated ability for effective leadership, communication, and organizational skills and an ability to balance a focus on the strategic mission and vision of the institution and college with attention to the tactics and goals of the departmental administrative unit.
Demonstrated ability to synthesize and analyze quantitative and qualitative data and prepare and present reports effectively.
Interest/passion in working closely with faculty, students, residents and staff to promote engagement, leadership and professional development through collaborative interactions interdepartmentally, university-wide, and with local, regional, and national organizations.
Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
Evidence of ability as a teacher;
Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

Proven success in a comprehensive research university setting.
Demonstrated ability, professionalism and mutual respect for all with the ability to build an effective leadership team through collaboration with other constituents and stakeholders.
A proven track record as a problem-solver and the ability to implement innovative solutions to contemporary challenges.
Outstanding communication skills: written, oral, listening, and public speaking ability, including the ability to forge and reinforce effective relationships with internal/external constituencies.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.
The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.
