COUN 704 Foundations of Higher Education Tuesdays 7:15-10:00 PM
COUN 704 is a 3-unit graduate counseling course required in the Higher Education and Student Affairs specialization on the Master’s of Counseling program.
Course Description: This course introduces counseling students to the field of higher education and student affairs: theory, research, practice, and current issues. As an introduction to this professional field, this course examines the historical, theoretical, and functional foundations of higher education and explores the role(s) of the counselor and student affairs administrators in higher education settings. The course aims to develop and build upon the counselor’s working knowledge of multicultural and diverse client/student populations and consider an equity and inclusion framework to provide culturally relevant and appropriate student affairs interventions and supports by not only understanding and adhering to that framework, but by advocating for social justice in education, and in higher education in particular. Understanding the oppressive foundational constructs of higher education systems provides students with the ability to form their perspectives to develop their careers as counselors.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have an M.S., M.A., and/or Ph.D. in the relevant area of Counseling or Psychology.
Evidence of college teaching experience with high ratings or at least 3 years of full-time experience (or the equivalent) as a practicing clinician (i.e., MFT, PCC, Clinical or Counseling Psychologist, School Counselor, School Psychologist, College Student Counselor, or Career Counselor).
Broad knowledge of the counseling field (theory, research, and practice) and of the specific counseling professions identified in the previous sentence.
A foundational knowledge of theory, research, practice, and current issues relevant to the field of higher education and student affairs, especially as it relates to advocating for social justice in education, and in higher education in particular.
Preferred Qualifications:
Evidence of excellence in teaching similar (experiential) graduate counseling or psychology courses.
In-depth knowledge of SMC’s counseling department and of the career specializations College Student Counselor Career Counselor.
Experience working in a higher education setting as a counselor.
