Summary

Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a full-time respiratory therapist with experience to work with the BCM Adult Cystic Fibrosis (CF)Center. The BCM Adult CF Center provides care for more than 350 patients and is located at Baylor McNair Campus at the heart of the Texas Medical Center. Cystic fibrosis patients require comprehensive approach to their care, at the core of which is maintenance of their respiratory health. They are required to complete multiple hours of pulmonary therapies daily to maintain their health and knowledge and understanding of these therapies is paramount in helping them adhere to this stringent regimen. We are looking for an individual who works well in a multidisciplinary team to provide the care and assistance these patients and families need.

Job Duties

Responsibilities would include:

  • Prepares and maintains accurate, HIPPAA compliant patient records, charts and documents.
  • Conducts annual assessment of respiratory health and therapies.
  • Sees patients as needed during routine visits for questions or gaps in their respiratory health regimen.
  • Educates patients on respiratory medications, delivery devices and airway clearance maneuvers and devices and be proficient in ordering those supplies.
  • Educates patients on their disease from a respiratory perspective.
  • Maintains appropriate teaching materials as well as supplies necessary for teaching and assisting patients (neb cups, nebulizers, PEP devices).
  • Maintains appropriate air filters in CF rooms.
  • Maintains educational handouts library available for patients.
  • Be available for education of non-cystic fibrosis patients when needed (bronchiectasis, ventilator patients).
  • Be available for sputum collection from ventilator dependent patients.
  • Ensures oxygen availability for those patients in need.
  • Monitors device and medication portals to identify patients in need of or who are struggling to obtain medical or mechanical therapies.
  • Be familiar with CF Foundation resources for patients (Healthwell, CF Peer Connect, Compass).
  • Attendance at three half days of clinic per week.
  • Attendance at weekly operations meeting and patient care huddle.
    • Collaborates with physicians and team members as part of a cohesive team care model.
  • Participation in CF related quality improvement and research projects.
  • Timely documentation of patient assessments.
  • Appropriate follow up on active patient issues.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an approved school of Respiratory Therapy.
  • No experience required.
  • Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician (CRTT).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Cystic Fibrosis experience.
  • EPIC Electronic Medical Records experience.
  • Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support from the American Heart Association.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • MicroSoft Office experience.
  • Ability to maintain all certifications and credentials.
  • Good organizational skills.
