Job Description
Unit Mission Statement
The Department of Biology is committed to excellence in research and teaching in the integrative life sciences, from molecules to ecosystems. Our goal is the development of well-trained biologists and scientifically literate citizens. The Faculty of teacher-scholars does innovative research and collaborates with undergraduate and graduate students to foster critical thinking, professional skills, and intellectual independence. These goals are met, in part, by actively promoting opportunities for students to conduct original research that advances science. The Faculty values diversity, collegiality, and the pursuit of academic connections across disciplines. We place a priority on being accessible to students and colleagues. The Department strives to create an inclusive and nurturing environment for student and faculty development that encourages outreach and participation in the College, local, and professional communities.
Position Summary
The Department of Biology at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in Molecular Cell Biology. Appointment will begin August 10, 2025. We welcome applications from cell biologists whose research and teaching expertise emphasizes molecular level mechanisms within a biomedical context. Both basic and translational research experience and plans are valued.
Duties include research, teaching, and service to the University. The applicant is expected to establish and maintain an innovative, externally funded research program that attracts and inspires a highly motivated student body of undergraduate and master’s students. Applicants should consider if their research can be done with undergraduate researchers and with biosafety levels not to exceed BSL-2. Annual teaching duties will include a large mid-level Molecular Cell Biology course along with cell biology related lecture and lab courses, averaging two courses per semester. Successful applicants will be expected to teach compelling courses and to contribute to professional and university service.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in cell biology or a related field and have had at least 18 months of relevant postdoctoral experience by the time appointment begins (August 10, 2025).
Preferred Qualifications
Evidence of research productivity as a postdoc. Previous instructional experience with cell biology related lecture and lab courses and an established record of mentoring successful undergraduate and junior researchers is preferred. Evidence of successful grantsmanship (e.g., for nationally competitive or other awards) will be considered a plus.
